New Visa number

Just got email that Chase Visa is sending out new cards because of the Home Depot deal O goody now I can change every account I have. Think I would be more worried about all those new cards out in the mail.

yeah. Someday I hope to have 'cards' delivered as a phone app, and scan them like Starbucks does already.
  • If someone is using the Home Depot issue to explain why you are getting a new card I be calling "BS"! I just got an e-mail that Discover is sending me a new card due to a "possible" security breach. This happens with one or more of my CC's every couple of years.
Sounds like they want you to believe that whatsoever is going on must be due to someone else's flaws but not anything they did or did not do.

I figured out how to avoid this mess last year after the Target compromise: I have one credit card that is used for nothing but automatic payments. I don't even carry it in my wallet.

I did use another credit card at HD during that time frame and will most likely get a new credit card from the issuer of that card but since I don't use it for automatic payments, it will really be no problem - just start using the new card instead of the old one.
  • And we had to call the bank to give them our PIN number, or that would have been reset too.
  • We just replaced our Capital One Visa because of a bogus charge. I don't know if it was HD related.

All of our replacements cards have to be activated before they can be used and that requires account information. So perhaps it's minimum risk to mail the cards???

  • Credit Cards are 'credit' cards
Debit Cards are 'debit' cards BUT are accepted as Credit Cards by merchants. Amount 'charged' is deducted from checking account.

If you used either one at Home Depot if was compromised. Even a Home Depot Credit Card used was compromised. Hackers went after ALL/ANY
  • Did the Home Depot credit breach effect both Credit and Debit cards or are they one and the same in the US? Here in Canada they are separate, a given card is either a credit card OR a debit card, not both.
  • I just received a new Debit card from one of my local banks due to the recent credit breaches. I actually use it as my high risk card anyway, so leave very little funds in the account.

Had received a notice a week ago that the bank was replacing it. Probably due to the account number appearing on one of the Russian underground websites.

BTW, I did mention this on another thread. Home Depot(HD) will send you a serial no. to activate free credit monitoring if you used a credit/debit card at one of their stores from April through September. Turns out, the credit breach at HD was bigger than Target's, involving as many as 750 million transactions.

Go to HD website, or see my earlier thread for the direct link to free HD credit monitoring.
