No break between tracks when recording vinyl to CD

By the way.. Personally.. I use Total Recorder Professional.. but then I bought it back before Audicity was out, and I have updated it a few times since, and my daughter is a very fine classical musician, and I did a lot of recording of her performances and concerts and when she started teaching all her classes.

In short, I worked it hard... I have tried Audicity,,, It is very good. but it is also very different.

I concur with others on using Audacity. I have used on multiple occasions to do exactly what you are doing.

Audacity will also split up concert albums so when burned in disk-at-once mode it will play with no gaps or you can choose your tracks. Here's how.

You should never stop a turntable with the stylus still in contact with the record. Due to friction, the stylus tip gets very hot, as long as the record is turning the hot stylus is not a problem but if stopped while still in contact with the record, it can actually melt a small indentation in the vinyl.

As others have said, Audacity works to break the tracks up. I also use a little utility called Tunatic that will "listen" to the song then identify the artist and song title which I can then cut & paste in order to name the track - cuts down on how much typing is needed. Bummer, I just tried Tunatic on my computer running Win 8.1 and it doesn't work there. First program I've encountered that worked in Win 7 but not Win 8.

Ok, the reason.... The automatic track breaker requires a brief period of silence, Since there IS NO Silence when the record is turning you have two ways of dealing with track breaks.. I recommend one of them.

The one I do not recommend is to physically stop the turntable between tracks for three to five seconds.

The one I do recommend is Audicity or Total Recorder (Professional version is best, by the way it will show you what you need to know and what I'm talking about).

Import the resulting file as a WAV file into your computer. Edit it with either of those programs (Audicity is free by the way) Using them you can slice and dice.

If you wish to preserve the order or the tracks name them like this:

O1-Come all ye fair and tender ladies
02-Mr. Peabody's Coal Train
03-John Henry

and so on.. That way when the burner software (your choice of CD burners) does an alpha sort.. 01 comes before 02 before 10 before 20 before 99.

I've transferred a whole lot of my LP's to digital CD's, but have not found any way to avoid marking the tracks manually. I actually use a dedicated CD recorder, start the LP, and place the track breaks manually as the LP plays in real time. I've also done a few using Audacity, with the procedure previously described.

Well I've learned that it's a good idea to follow, at least try what you guys say. I'll download Audacity after I get these all copied and give it a try. I had thought seriously about doing one track at a time, but I'm just getting good at the conversion and not sure about my capabilities.

The name of the group whose LPs I am copying was The Travelers 3. I met them at the first show of their first gig. That was 1960 in the Shell Bar at Kaiser's Hawaiian Village. They are all alive and still active in the business. Kaleo Oyama the leader of the group, lives in Glendale and hosts a get together for the O'Hana every year and we are going this Saturday. Lots of slack key Hawaiian music and "tell story time".

Audacity records what it hears.
If you do a full LP without stopping, then that will be one long session to Audacity.
If you expand the recording line in audacity, you will see where the pauses between songs are. You next need to break out the songs yourself. Basically to do this, you highlight the song and then save that portion and name it.
It takes a bit to understand the correct way to do this, but once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy although time consuming.
Even if you have recorded the LP already, you can read that back into Audacity and break the songs apart at your convenience.

This is the only way to insure that the recorded tracks are kept separate on the CD. Some recording software attempts to detect breaks in tracks, but basically a guess.
