NOOK Going Manual Charging

This is a "Gripe" pure and simple.
Since Barnes & Noble decided to buy products whose USB micro port is totally unreinforced - the 2 pinpoint solder connections broke and it is unrepairable. How small is pinpoint? See the period at the end of this sentence? The bottom of the question mark?

When the Nook warranty runs out I recommend the unit be taken apart and Goop adhesive be carefully applied to anchor the port.
I am going to try and solder a wire pair today. directly to the battery bypassing the onboard 3.7 volt charger.

Never let a Chinese designer think.

The BOTTOM of a reader is apt to rest on a customer's stomach.

The USB port of the NOOK is on the bottom. Utterly ignorant design.

I can buy a full fledged 15.6" laptop for the price of 3 Nooks.

But cannot download Nook books to a laptop.

Ereaders are held in the hands but the units are designed to be maximum cheap. The hands rebel.

My day to gripe about stupid designed electronics. I do not read from right to left nor down to up. I do not revolve faucet handles clockwise to open. I blame US merchandisers who gleefully accept this stuff. Their regard is solely profit not intelligent design.

Grrr. Snarf, Snap.
  • i guess your definition of "full fledged" and Mine, don't match

you can get a 14" dell with 2gb ram and 160gb hd for $159

slow ? its fast enough to stream video over any internet connection thats good enough to stream it

not everybody needs a 1TB hd and 8gb of ram
high end gamers and people doing video editing and processing can make use of it
    i fit the video side, with a 17" Hp 6gb ram, 760gb HD, core i-5 64bit win 8.1

you don't need that much CPU power to surf the web, send emails and read documents

20yrs ago that dell would have cost $3000 maybe more, and probably weigh 30#
  • He did say "full-fledged laptop". I don't think a $159 laptop is going to be "full-fledged" - it's going to be very slow among other deficiencies.

IRC did you not say the next Nook was going to cost $139
when you posted in the other thread, about usb bypass charging

you can goto frys in san diego and buy a laptop for $159

    or a 10" android laptop $99

unless nooks are down to $39, the three for one price doesn't hold water
  • My problem with the Nook color was not the USB port in the tablet, but the charger that fit into it. It was very fragile. I was able to find 2 at a B&N store, just by calling the ones nearest to me. The store was kind enough to take my CC info over the phone and mail them to me.

I extended the life of one of the chargers by wrapping it tightly with electrical tape, to reinforce.

Their entire charging system is just badly designed.

I did enjoy my Nook for a long time, but decided to opt for something more versatile, in a Samsung Android tablet. I put the Nook app on it and can download any of my books to it from BN.

I'm keeping an eye on BN in case they decide to quit supporting user accounts with purchased books. If that looks like happening, I will download all of them. But I will never buy another Nook product.
  • 1. I have the Nook software on my Samsung tablet. I bet you a half cup of coffee you can get it added to a laptop.

    2. I charge it up after use so I never have to use it while plugged in. Agree with you about the charging port location (it's also at the bottom of my tablet) BUT I also have a protective cover on my tablet which extends below the port about 1/2 inch - adds some protection.
  • Who reads with the ebook plugged in all the time?
I 'm a big reader and it takes days to drain the battery.
One overnight charge and it's good for days.
One shure way to kill a lithium battery is to leave it plugged in all the time
  • You can get a nook reader for Android tablets or smart phones
So yes you can read nook books on something besides a nook reader

And you can hold it any way you and and book will auto correct orientation
Do you can have the USB port up down or on the side

You got a phone, check out the readers in the Google play store
Try one on your phone free
If you like it, then you can go Android tablet, instead of nook
Won't cost you anything but some time
  • Maybe it's just men. I don't know any women who lay their ereader on their stomachs... Maybe the Chinese don't factor in big American beer bellies? :)
  • It's not that the USB port is on the bottom by accident or mistake. They put it there on purpose so it can break. The companies selling these things don't want them lasting years.

At first I was annoyed that Amazon put the charging jack on top of the Kindle 7 I bought earlier this year, but I eventually realized it will save the life of the tablet over time.
