Portable satellite

Thinking of buying a new 5th wheel. We have always had a roof satellite. With the prices of the portables looks like a good option.

Does anyone have a Winegard or Flex for Direct TV? Any problems with auto search? Does the auto search take very long?

We have the VuQube and and like it. The one thing that I like about it compared to the Wineguad Carryout is that it only requires a singe cable to the Carryouts cable and 12V connection. I would like to see Wineguad come out with a portable unit like the Pathway X2 for DirecTV. Larger dish and only one cable unlike their Answer they have now for DirecTV.

  • Brother-in-law just bought a King Flex VuQube and it works great with DirecTV. (not HD). You can add a second receiver. He ordered it on sale from PPL Motorhomes in Houston. From the PPL website: *NOTE: The FLEX antenna is not compatible with DirecTV SWM satellite receiver equipment Your local channels may not be available when traveling outside your home area. Dual tuner receivers or receivers with built-in recorders are not recommended and will not have full functionality when used with the FLEX antenna

For a period of time I had both the roof and portable setup (SD only) with the DTV HR24 receiver.

But as a warning to others: We were on the central Oregon coast planning to watch the Winter Olympics. Oops no Olympics. After numerous calls to DTV it was discovered that in that area DTV DOES NOT transmit any SD local stations - all stations are HD. Several other posters have also reported this for other areas. So I upgraded to the RF Mogul SWM dish which is compatible with the HR24.

Since then I upgraded the house to SWM both dish and upgrade to HR44 receiver (receives both SD and HD but SWM only). The 5 channel recording is beneficial for watching pre recorded shows when trees are in the way of the dish for the rig.

In the future I may add a SWM portable dish for the rig.

  • We have the Winegard Carryout for DirecTV and have no complaints. It can usually find the signal fairly quickly but there have been a few times, that we have to move it and let it search again. It just depends on where the trees are.
  • Most of the non roof-mounted automatic sat finders do a decent job of obtaining a Directv sat signal, none can get HD content from Directv if that's is what you require. There is an automated roof mounted system and HD sat dishes that can be mounted on a tripod to gain Directv HD access.

We often camp among the ponderosa pine trees out here in the mountain west and sometimes need a 100' plus of coax to obtain as signal so we need a tripod mounted sat dish. Purchased the same dish we have installed at home on Ebay and mounted it on the same homemade stand we used for the round 18" Directv SD Dish we used for years.

Thought it would be more difficult to aim, but we do the same thing we did to get a signal with the old SD sat dish and just point to sat 101. As long as the dish is set up according to receiver indicated numbers, the rest of the satellites come right in.

With clear shot to the south we can be up and running in under 10 minutes, every channel just like at home. Even if I purchase a rig with roof-mounted sat I will always carry the portable for camping where exposure to the southern sky is limited.
  • Have the carry out and no problems after you learn the directions. Had to call in and assistance was lots faster than expected, and tech. knew how to walk me thru. Nice system 50' cords just remember to buy the ac to 12volt adapter it does come in handy. (unit needs power and coax cable both.
