Touch screen problem with ipad

Just started having an annoying problem with my iPad Air 2. When I tap some links such as the delete link or the subscribe link on this forum, the link "blinks" but nothing happens. Seems to happen most when I tap a link embedded within something else. I have turned off the unit completely, let it sit, cleaned the screen with approved cleaner used my finger and a proper tipped stylus, to no avail. All of the above seem to help for a bit, especially rebooting, but the problem always comes back. Any ideas?

  • Zachary, I do the reboot as you describe it. The problem seems to clear up when I do that temporarily. I have an air 2, purchased in Feb this year. I really don't know if everything is updated I have no idea how to check that.... But chrome seems to take care of itself and I have had a couple of automatic Apple updates occur the same time as DW does. When I go on Facebook, which is a rare event, when the problem is occurring I cannot get pics to expand, but when I reboot then I can. I will try your suggestion of settings and reset things. Thx again!

Wow, thx for the offer and help. I am not a geeky computer user almost all is just web stuff, forums, email. But per your suggestion I tried a few apps a news feed and a campground list, solitaire, everything worked normally. The problem seemed gone last nite but we had been away all day. This morning it is back. I rebooted like this: I completely power off with button on upper left. Let sit 1+ minute, then turn back on, sign in and all works well for awhile. I only use chrome and last nite I turned the pop up blocker in chrome off. If I could figure out how to move all my bookmarks to safari, I might move, but I really have not figured it out. Thx again for any insight.

PS it occurs when I click on a email link from a forum telling me I have a new reply. In that case it does not even blink. I also get a information summary from Stratford.com daily which is intelligence stuff. At the end of the intro to a story it says "click here to continue" nothing happens at all both examples are in blue text. On this forum I cannot delete threads in my forums I no longer follow nor can I subscribe to new ones. Everything else works normally. Rebooting as described above temporarily solves the issue.

Well it sounds software/app related and not hardware... good news sorta. I think you have the reboot right but to be sure you are holding the sleep/power button down until the power off swipe appears on the screen and then you swipe that... right? One press puts iPad to sleep, press and hold until swipe shows turns it off completely. Shocking how many miss this and think they have it off. Personally I prefer Chrome over Safari... a couple of things I forgot... what iPad do you have? Are all apps and iOS updated? ...just checking.

One quick thing to try... go to Settings/General/reset/ and press reset all settings. DO NOT press erase all content and settings... though it may come to that.

If that does not work... try reinstalling the Chrome app... bummer you will lose your bookmarks on this one. There are ways to save them but I'll let you Google that and attempt. To reinstall Chrome (or any other app) hold down the icon of the application you want to delete. After a few seconds your screen will start to “wiggle” and an X will appear next to each of the apps you've installed via the App Store. Tap the “x” next to the icon of the app you want to remove. When prompted, select “Delete“.

next up is kinda unfun... try these and take it from there!

That happens to me on my old iPad- mine acts like Safari doesn't deal with javascript well, though mine is stuck on iOs 5.

Yeah Chris, age is a problem for you. Apple quit supporting the original iPad at iOS 5. What happens is that the developers for the apps write for the latest and greatest iOS and then work down to the older versions. At some point they actually can't (or won't) include them and things just quit working or are wonkey at best. I (but not Apple nor app developers) will not recommend update apps on original iPad and soon on the iPad 2's as I am positive Apple will soon stop pushing updates to those devices as well. It kind of gets to the point of if the old dog is working well or mostly so... leave it alone.

Hi there... I will try and help (Certified Apple iOS tech)... the fact that the link blinks tells me that the digitizer (glass you touch) has recognized the input of your touch or pen but the app is not doing anything with the instruction. Reasons are numerous. You say you have rebooted... will you define that for me? Tell me your process of rebooting. It sounds like the problem is occurring in a web browser... are you using Safari? Chrome? Something else??? Does this happen only in web browser(s) or are touch inputs being ignored in other apps or system pages

simple things first. try cleaning the screen.

Ironed in post, I cleaned the screen first. I have not changed any settings as far as pop ups go and use chrome, not safari nothing there has changed. Off to a Apple Store I guess...

  • It may be an issue with not allowing pop up windows. Try turning off 'Block Pop-ups' in Settings->Safari, then try again.
You may also want to make sure you don't have an Ad-Blocker turned on. Settings->Safari->Content Blockers
  • I would contact Apple Support or take it to an Apple Store.
Also try it in a different location. Might be cell or internet problem.
If it Blinks like you said, the touch screen is responding.
