Tricking DirecTV...extending the dvr recording

Today's Nascar race may have a rain delay. What can I do to guarantee that I will record the entire race even though it may finish four or more hours after the scheduled time. I know that I can add a couple of hours but sometimes it takes five or six to get the races in. Will simply recording the following shows on the schedule accomplish this?

Answer depends on DVR On some you can go to "Advanced" recording option when you program the show to record and add 30, 60, 99 minutes to the show.

Easiest way however is so simply you will likely headsmack.

Record the show(s) following the race so if it runs over it gets recorded anyway.

And Nascar wonders why they are losing fans. It used to be "Everyman's" sport. Now it requires cable or satellite, and not the basic package either. My last season for a variety of reasons.
  • Thanks all. It is no fun missing the ninth inning, the fourth quarter, or the last fifty laps of a race. I used to set a vcr for that segment and the next six hours to take care of delays. Apparently DirecTV has no option to record by time rather than by program guide.

  • NBC always replays the race early the next week on NBCSN. It's labeled NASCAR 120. This week it is Monday at 1:30 CDT.
  • We stayed up late and watched the coke zero 400 at Daytona complete with the rain delay
It was a spectacular race I wish I had recorded it , on my Home Worx PVR
But I recorded another program, so we could watch the race
  • Today's race is on NBCSN so delay could go the NBC.
    First year using NBCSN.
You can also watch live on NBCSN Live on your PC or smart phone app.

  • I always add the three hour extension for NASCAR races. If I anticipate rain delays I then access the guide and go out three hours beyond the scheduled race time and record the next two or three programs. Easy to cancel later if you find there is no need.

Only time this doesn't work is if the race is scheduled to be on Fox and it's rain delayed and they switch to FS1 or FS2. Haven't had this happen with NBC yet.
  • For short extensions pushed by golf or basketball games I usually use the "add time" feature just to avoid interruptions in playback. But for long delay situations there's absolutely no problem with just recording the following shows.
  • I record the shows scheduled to follow the race. If the race is still running, DirecTV's schedule shows the scheduled programs, not the race even though the race is still in progress.
