USB flash drive voice recorder

For those who are not familiar with these, they look like normal flash drives, but also have a switch on the side. When the switch is on the device acts like a microphone and records the sound around it, voice, music, etc.

Has anyone tried one of the USB flash drive voice recorders? They range in price from $17.33 to $79.00. The question is which ones have the best recording quality? Higher bitrates give you better quality, but I can’t find anything on line that compares the various devices to each other.

  • I don't have any personal experience using this but it is not expensive and the reviews are positive with an average of 3.9/5 stars: 8GB USB Pen Drive Digital Audio Voice Recorder 150 Hours

I personally would choose it over the one from the Harriet Carter catalog. In my experience, any tech items in those type of catalogs are over priced. They both look very similar in their pictures yet the Harriet Carter claims 25 hour record time while the Amazon one claims 150 hr for less than 1/2 the price. If those record times are accurate then I would guess the Harriet Carter model has 2GB while the other has 8GB. The Amazon one has free shipping while Harriet Carter charges $7 (at least to my location). Seems like a no brainer to me.

Thanks, this one does look like it will attach to my keychain! I'll research the bitrate on it. Don't worry, it's not for music, just to record notes and phone calls.
  • I've been using an Olympus WS100 for several years with good results. It does has a playback mode, but sound is better if file is moved to computer for playback. A nice feature is sound activated recording. Olympus calls it variable control voice actuator.

  • I use my smartphone to make notes. Either by typing it in, which I know your not into or using the voice recorder to record it. Course all I make notes of is perhaps a quick phone number or directions or someones name.

  • put on table?? the speaker would be 'tiny' !!
or are you going to transcribe to the pc

micro recorder is one idea, usb flash drive size is IMO a different idea

an application for your phone sounds like a better idea
  • Thanks tiger

When I asked for “best” quality, I’m not looking for good quality; I’m looking for understandable quality.

What I’m looking for is basically a device I can attach to my keychain, have with me all the time, and be able to pull it out when I want to record a note to myself or capture a conversation or phone call that I put on speaker phone. It would be nice to pull out the flash drive, place it on the table and not have to rely on memory regarding something I discussed with someone else
  • My 13 year old MP3 player, 256 MB, is also a voice recorder and AM/FM radio, all in one fairly tiny package.

I've had some experience at work with portable digital recorders about the size of older cell phones and they were junk.

Best recording I've done is the Audio Memos app on iPad and iPod touch. I turn it on, set it on the podium as I give a lecture, and it does its thing. I've recorded one-hour lectures, then put them online for my students to review. Total recording time can be much longer than that; I have not tested the limits. Why not use something like this instead of buying yet another device?
