Virus

My other computer is infected with the "FBI cybercrime virus. I tried Safe mode,it still comes up with the virus. HELP
  • Similar to ronmc I was able to startup my laptop in Admin and run Malwarebytes. It found six trojan viruses and quarantined and deleted them. That was done this morning and I am able to function as normal, thus far. Don't know if the virus is lurking inside somewhere.
I had tried a Restore back a couple of days and that didn't work.
The local Geeks store wanted $180 to save all my data files and clean out the virus's. So far I have saved that amount.
  • I find google a valuable resource when dealing with computer problems.
  • I am not a computer geeks so don't yell at me if I have this wrong. Dick B. mentions that he tried to do a restore after clearing the baddies. It's my understanding that these programs like to install themselves along with the backups so it's likely counter productive to fix a the issue and then use the restore command to reinstall them!

I would personally like to see the folks who send out virus programs sued into a lifetime of slavery.

Back when the first virus, and anti-virus, programs came out I often wondered if the anti-companies who were selling the Anti Viral software were also sending the viruses out,, One might say "Seeding the market".

Turns out one of them was.. No, sorry, no names will be mentioned as I can't afford the needed lawyers. Oh, same source tells me one of them would never do such a thing too. Likewise I won't mention that name either.
  • Keep a puppy-linux live cd handy to boot from, copy any files you want to keep to a usb drive.
Then you can clean up your drive anyway you want.

Basically, never do a restore after cleaning up malware. Unless you know you are restoring to a date before you were infected. The wiser path is after you've corrected the issue, turn off/on System Restore to clear out old restore points.
  • Restore will have a little affect, as it will reload config and registry files. It does not delete files though, so it will not eliminate infected files. YOu could end up reinfected by the same source file as the original file carrying the virus. If you do restore, you need to immediately go through the recommendations of Malwarebytes.
  • I don't see where anyone has mentioned how to avoid getting these Virus' like the emails everyone keeps opening when the have no idea who sent them.

After the attack treatments are great, but preemptive care needs to be stressed too.
  • You can't 100% avoid getting these types of emails. Just don't open email attachments from senders you don't trust or are not expecting. You can always contact the sender to confirm the attachment if it's originated from someone you know.

I rarely ever see these virus attached emails as most all are auto sent to my junk folder.
  • From my own experience, I agree that some virus products create the problems we pay them to cure. With the one I was using, as long as I continued to pay for my subscription there were no problems. If I didn't renew, then the problems started. Twice I let my subscription lapse. Twice I got hit with an infection.

Of course, I thought the problems were due to not having this wonderful product activated on my system. Turns out the problems were because I had this product on my system but hadn't renewed.
