wifi from outside the rv to inside the rv...I need help??

OK, I "manage" to get most of my 'tech stuff' handled, but this has me stumped.
Right now we're 'parked' in southern AZ. If we use our phone (4g LTE) as a hotspot we get great speed. But using the wifi that comes with our parking spot (we're on a private lot) the speed sucks, and its hardwired dsl!
I just installed a TP-Link wifi card in the pc, supposedly capable of 450mpbs. It's in an Alienware desktop that sits on the floor of our slide out, on the 'away' side of our rv, about 40(?) feet from the wall wherein the wifi router resides. (I might mention we are in an aluminum framed fifth wheel, if that makes a difference?)
If I open the TP-Link interface, it says our network "rate" is between 10-20 mbps and if we try and download anything that has video (weather channel) it is sooooo slow, the video stops multiple times just to catch up!!
What can I do about this? Is there some kind of gizmo that I can put outside our fiver to receive and boost the signal inside to the PC?
The PC is pretty much stuck where it is...it weighs 89 pounds so the floor is where it's gotta stay! (Yeah, I know, I could leave it home and use the laptop, but it's WAY more computer than my laptop, what can I say?
Anybody got any ideas what kind of gizmo I can get to boost the outside wifi to the inside wifi antennas so that my speed gets better?
Please??? And thanks!

  • I would suggest that you contact the DSL provider and find out what level of service you can expect. There is very cheap DSL that provides a bare minimum of service and there is very good DSL that costs more.
It's quite possible that you have a service that only provides 500K-1MB down (much slower up). If that's the case only a service increase will help your problem.
If you do find that you have something like 2MBx5MB service but are seeing issues then you start some trouble-shooting. Do you have any kind of portable computer, tablet, smart phone? If so, you can get close to the router with that device, sign into the WiFi and see if you get the same terrible results or not.
  • I agree with the other posters - the DSL is your problem. There's no comparison between DSL and cable internet - the cable wins by a couple orders of magnitude.
  • OK, more clarification...
On a private lot in Yuma area...two RV spots and a Casita (little house). Owner is not here yet, just us. We have the place, and the router, to ourselves.
The router is a CenturyLink, and to get it started, they had to reset it because it had been off for....six months? Now on, it sits near the ceiling in the Casita, which is about ??? 34-40 feet from where my computer sits, inside our fiver and down low.
No campground involved, no one else on this thing, just us, two computers and a phone. We've been here and on the wifi since Monday (now Friday evening) and this thing is SLOW! At home, we have cable dsl, 1000mbps, and wifi to the trailer outside is about the same distance from the router as we are here, but the speed inside the trailer here VS at home...no comparison. Almost...might as well be on dial up again.
    So there we are...

Oh yeah, why is it so heavy? It's got a radiator to cool it off, liquid cooling in a computer...and it ain't new. I bought this in 2009, it's old...like me!!
  • In most cases wifi and streaming video do not play well together.

  • I am confused about your setup. You first say you are using a hardwired DSL line and then you say you need a better wifi signal. Can you clarify that part of your setup?
You also need to know that when you see a message that shows your network rate, that the rate that the router is capable of providing. However, if you are connected to a 1MB connection that's all the router can pass. It sounds like you are connected to very slow DSL and no router can fix that.
  • It's not the wifi signal, it's the 'backhaul' internet connection that's lousy. And there's nothing you can do about that. It's typical campground lousy service. And the more people on it trying to stream video the worse it gets.

An 89lb computer? What does it have in it..tubes? :)
