Windows 7 and live mail

This thread surely reflects on the age of RV.net participants. I am 77 so I can make that statement.

Resistance to change is rampant with no recognition of the accompanying loss of benefit in rejecting newer solutions. And newer solutions do not necessarily drop old function, e.g. gmail has a full set of hot keys for those that prefer their use.

Microsoft is simply moving into this better world with their gmail-like web-based email system. I don't like or use Microsoft products (other than the unavoidable need for the Windows platform) but it's simple to see they are trying to avoid being made redundant by gmail and the cloud-based world of like email clients.

Stay with your relic email client but don't try to justify them based on their prior utility. They have been passed by. And not too far down the road something else will come along to supersede current technology

Me either. I've yet to see any web interface that works as well as a standalone client and with the latency & page refreshes they can't. I frequently use hot keys and can move around much faster with them. This is the same reason 'modern' applications just slow me down when they constantly change the UI and remove hot keys in favor of oversized buttons.

I use MS OFFICE OUTLOOK from version 2007... This will interface any mail server... I use NETZERO.COM for email as well as METROCAST which provides my internet here at the house...

Have used this same MS OFFICE SUITE 2007 with my older XPs WIN7 WIN8 and now WIN10 with no issues...

When WIN10 came out and wanted me to go with the MS OFFICE 360 which is a monthly subscription I guess I declined...

I suspect this is different from the type of EMAIL SERVER you are talking about...

Well, with a standalone email client you limit the amount of data used to access your email. With webmail, you're at the mercy of whatever crud is being added to your web page. I use both, but I could see the issue if you have a limited data plan. Plus no extra steps to save your emails if you want.

Keep in mind that this pertains to syncing with Microsoft servers only, but does not mean Windows Live Mail will not work with all other servers. If you use Live Mail like we do to access our business email and others, it will continue to work just fine. This is just another instance of Microsoft bullying everyone into Windows 10, which I will never do. If it comes to the point where my Windows 7 does not work, the laptop will probably die first, I will switch to a Mac. Chuck

I don't know how MS has determined who gets the emails or when, but many of us who use the Live Mail client have received the email. From what I've read, you should be OK with Outlook (there are some specific instructions on the MS web site on things to do for versions of Outlook older than v.2016). If you're running Windows 10, I've found the built-in apps to be not too objectionable...

Interesting. I use Windows Live Mail client for three of my email accounts. I use Outlook (Office 2010) for 4 more accounts including my Hotmail account. I didn't get the notice you got. I guess Outlook is still good for now.

I won't use webmail. I'll drop my Hotmail account before that.

It may be the result from copying & pasting from another source. Possibly MS Outlook? Which may include formatting characters.

I think there may be some confusion in this thread regarding the following:

1) There are Live Mail accounts (@Live.com) which you can access via Outlook.com in a web browser and there is a Live Mail client for the local PC (part of Micr0soft Live Essentials 2012). These are two separate things. It is the Live Mail local client that will no longer sync to Microsoft email servers as of the end of June.

2) IE, Chrome, FireFox, etc., are just web browsers and, as such, are not email applications. You may be accessing web-based email accounts via a web browser, but the browsers are not email clients as such.

3) Yes - it s__ks that Microsoft is depriving us of one of the best little free email/calendar/contacts clients for the local PC running Windows. Search for reviews and read up on the other free email clients available - they're out there. Unfortunately, many of them do not handle all three of the functions I consider necessary. My wife and I both run Windows 10 on our laptops and I've just converted us to the built-in mail, calendar, and contacts apps that are part of Windows 10. There is some change to get used to, but they will continue to sync with the Microsoft email servers and we can work off-line when necessary and not have to access web-mail through a browser. (We both also use Chrome for everything - IE has fallen behind the times...)

4) Finally, you can purchase Outlook Personal Edition for $99 or so - but that's $99 I'd rather not spend.
