- Alan_HepburnExplorerCouple of years ago I switched my laptop over to linux Mint Cinnamon - it updates when I tell it to, and the updates have never taken more than 5 minutes to download and install. I keep the laptop as a dual-boot with Windows 8.1 because I have 2 programs that will not run in linux, even with using PlayOnLinux. I have to boot into Windows maybe 2 or 3 times per year.
- Chris_BryantExplorer III messed my wife’s computer up, installed a new ssd drive (laptop), downloaded the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS install iso, put it on a thumb drive, installed it on her computer, updated, as the installer didn’t have the latest. Synced her Firefox account, copied her wallpaper, done.
Less than 90 minutes. - CFergusonExplorer II

One of the things you want to do with W10 is select the option of picking and choosing your updates. (sorry, I cant rem where that is hidden). When I did that, I found that I really didn't need the multiple gigabytes of Chinese and Vietnamese language and such and my updates went much faster.
(seriously, theres a LOT of that kind of cr@p in the updates)
If you aren't a fulltimer and have a stick built place you hang out as well as an RV, you may want to consider Win 10 Pro for your travel computer/laptop. I made sure and bought our new laptop with Win 10 Pro. With Win 10 Pro, when you go camping, you can tell the system you are on a metered connection, and it won't download any Win updates while metered.
That's good to know too.
(fwiw, I run Ubuntu. Too much microsoft spyware in W10 for me) - fj12ryderExplorer IIII knew there was a good reason not get rid of my Windows 7 boxes.
There's definitely a lot of "sharing of data" with Windows 10. Too much IMO, if I want Microsoft to know something I would like to be the one to tell them, not my computer without my permission. - IroverExplorerI believe one has to have Broadband to get faster W-10 updates! I have tried at the local Library; at places that have WiFI; and on a Verizon Hotspot. It still takes 6+ HOURS. I don't have home service due to the area I live; no availability!

Same here I more or less gave up on Windoze for most stuff (Still use it when I have to)
Set up a new HP 450 Gig hard drive for a young lady friend.. Then she lost or mistyped her password and we had to do a reset to new. I too her out to dinner while it was happening and still had to wait when we returned. but it was good cause her aging Dell was.. Dying (About a month later totally).
I've had to "Power wash" my Chromebooks and .. Well the sequence
Order lunch. Catch a virus.. Power wash. Back on line via a safe router. Lunch served. - philhExplorer IIWork computer, on a WIRED 1G network... warned me it was going to take 4-6 hours to update. SERIOUSLY??? I started it at 3:00 and went home :)
- delwhjrExplorerOne thing some people have overlooked is the sharing that Windows does. Go to Update and Security in settings and check to see what options are allowed. I turned off Delivery Optimization to clear any data sharing back to other PCs. This is something to check on a regular basis as it has been known to "mysteriously" turn back on by itself. Allowing sharing can seriously degrade the update process in some cases. You can also check how much Microsoft has sent by looking at the activity monitor ( last line) on the optimization page.
