Break up extended trip with flights home?

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie based in California. I am very close to buying a 42' Class A RV that we would like to take on some extended trips, but we worry about being away from home for more than 2-3 weeks at a time.

I was imagining that it should be possible to break up long itineraries by parking/storing the RV at/near an airport, flying home for a few weeks, then returning to resume the trip.

Has anyone used this approach and found it workable (or not)?

  • please define "worry about".

    Break ins?

    The grass needs mowing?

    Homesick?

    Mail piles up?

The kids drink all your booze?

Different worries have different solutions. What you suggest can be done, of course, but it seems sorta pointless (and expensive).
  • Of course it's doable, with todays ridiculous air fares, it'll be extremely expensive(I never would), but my question would be Why ? Unless you have to go back to work, many folks stay gone 2-3 or 4 months at a time. Just learn how to close up the house for an extended absence, have a close friend or relative to keep an eye on things and enjoy the trip.
Broken up into 2-3 weeks at a time will be a major pain, you'll be doing more driving than enjoying, (unless your staying put for a couple weeks at a time).
  • We do the same thing, we travel for 2 - 4 months and then leave the MH someplace in storage. Right now, we're home for the summer with the MH stored Stateside.

Traveling for only two weeks make sense if you're using vacation time. I you're retired, flying home after only two weeks is a little different. I get very tired of dealing with the hassel of airports and security.

My friends just leave their rig at the RV park while they fly home.

    Very doable.

Why not :) Leave your contact info with park mgt for emergencies.
  • Sure, it will work fine.

The only issue is it will get pricey and you will constantantly be looking for somewhere to store the rig. We are more like every 3-4months and we often wind up driving depending the distance and duration of the return trip (plus if we need to take stuff back and forth).
