Extended Warranties - Are they worth it?

If we are considering buying a used class C, there will be no warranty with the dealership, so I want to investigate purchasing an extended warranty.

Does anyone think they are worth it?

I appreciate any input and thoughts!

HUGz! Jules

  • They are worth it for me! On a previous MH it covered a transmission rebuild and a frig problem. On this MH it repaired the basement air twice, a new cooling coil in the Norcold, and repair of HWH jacks. After the air cond repair, after a few months without much use, the unit started making noise. The dealer said it was a new problem...the warranty company checked and said it was the same thing it had just paid for...the dealer apologized for an error and fixed it without charge. Contact Wholesalewarranties.com. They offer an assortment of products and act as agents if you have a claim.

    X2.
I had a service person tell me the only kind to get was the kind that gave the repair person a Credit Card number to be billed by the repair person. The ones that gave purchase orders were bad. The repair person calls the warranty company and the company authorizes the repair. Then one of two things happen.
They either give the repair shop a CC number and the shop runs it. It is either good and you get your repair or it is bad and you do not.
With a purchase order type deal you are on the hook for the repair and the repair shop has a mechanics lean on your rig. A lot of shops refuse to deal with P.O. warranty companies.
Find out how the company intends to pay the repair shop.

  • They're worth it to the insurance companies selling them :) They're also worth it to someone lucky enough to purchase a lemon.
  • Extended warranty....if provided by mfg. of vehicle

If provided by 3rd party.....rarely are they worthwhile. They are not warranties..they are 'service contracts' heavily written in favor of insurer.
  • Overall and in generalities, rarely IMO but it depends on the details w/i the warranty. Most extended warranties are fixed to ensure the "offerer" comes out ahead as opposed to you.

I know that neither I nor the man are particularly handy (him less than me and he's PERFECTLY content with the status qua:D) so I'll be buying new with the longest warranty I can get.

I admire those who can pull an electric circuit board apart, add mods that involve plumbing but I know the limitations of me and mine.
  • Generally speaking - NO! (Unless provided by the Manufacturer)
Extended warranties are usually an insurance policy and insurance Companies aren't in business to lose money!
