EXTRA Beginners in RVing! Help!

Good Afternoon All,
My husband is in the military and I will be enlisting as well within the next month. I refuse to rent another anything that I will ultimately not own in the end. We are set on purchasing and RV we just aren't sure if we should get. He wants a new car, but the one we have has at least another 3 or 4 more years on it; and I feel like we would be stretching our finances thin buy purchasing a new and TT. I would like a class A considering we are going to be living in it full time for the next 3 years. Our budget is 75 to 80 thousand. So...should we get a new TT and find a used truck that's in good condition or keep the car we have a buy a Class A??? Please help! Thanks ??
  • I am retired from the military and I do not think you should purchase an RV to live in. You are purchasing something that will depreciate every year and you will have to have money for maintenance. You also do not control where you will be stationed. If you are assigned to Minot, ND, you will definitely not want to live in the RV. Your best bet is to use on base housing if available or rent something.
  • Really need some more info to help out.

    1. Which branch of the Service? (ie Army, Air Force, etc)
    2. What grade is your husband and what grade will you be?

My qualifications for advice. I've been an enlisted Soldier in the Army for 25 years and will retire at 26 yrs. And while I'm not married to another Soldier, I've had plenty of Soldiers and/or friends that were.

    So, some words of advice:
Despite what you've been told, there is NO guarantee that you will be stationed in the same place. I currently have a 1LT whose husband is in Guantanamo. When he returns, he will be going to a different post than she is. Also, I had a friend who was stationed on the same post as his wife, but in different units. She deployed six months before he did. Which means he returned six months after she did. They didn't see each other for two years.
Next, you're not going to be making that much money. Especially if you are lower enlisted. Yes, you'll both be making a paycheck, but only one of you will be getting the additional benefits, ie BAH, BAS, etc. Get on post housing. No rent, no utilities, and no problems if you have to leave early.
GET THE TSP!! Start saving early. 'Nough said.
I think the location thing has been covered.

Good luck to you both. Being a dual military family is one of the most difficult things I've ever seen a Soldier have to deal with.

I do not know what you can get for 75K new but in the Used market you should be able to get a very nice class A.. in fact I know where there is a Class A that appears to be in excellent condition (But there may be a Gotcha,, not sure since I did not test that system) for about half that when it goes on the market. I know it needs new house batteries but there is an expert on scene who can help you with that, And there MAY be a plumbing issue.. NOT for sale by a dealer so your PDI (post Delivery Inspection/instruction) Will be by an RVer who has a fair idea of how that rig works. RUNS great (I did drive it, only a few hundred yards but I did drive it).

There are many other deals as good scattered about the country.

Reserve at least 5K for "Incendetals" including making your car into a trailer (Towable) which sounds a lot more complex than it is.

now: A class A being a MOTOR vehicle likes to travel, they do not like sitting in one spot for years on end.... Trailers, on the other hand, are better at sitting, but you'd need to either pay someone to deliver it or get a big honking truck to replace your car.

Still with 75K you should be able to do quite well in either market, Including a new Truck (or slightly used)

IF you go the trailer route pick the trailer first, then get a truck at least ONE SIZE LARGER than what you need to tow it.. I'm serious, that one size (or more) larger makes it way easier to tow.
