FireFighter Retiring in a couple years

I'm 48yro almost 49 and looking at retirement at the age of 50 being a firefighter for 20 years atm. I drive a 2017 Nissan Titan XD diesel and am looking at a Grand Design travel trailer one specific that my truck can carry no problem. Whatever the TT I get I plan on spending a lot extra and put around 1000 amh of a solar battery and solar panel system on, so yes plan on mostly if not all boondocking.

My question is: Are there many people on the road at that age that do a lot of traveling and boondocking? I'm single and kinda rather intimidated, scared or whatever of jumping out into the new life that I would like to do. Reason i'm researching now early on. I know there are a lot older than me and I don't mind if in a community or if off grid a fellow neighbor a lot older than me I will always get along with anybody no matter what.

My Dad will probably finally retire as well for good at the age of 70 when I turn 50 and i'll probably follow him for a bit, but of course will go my own way early on as in i'm not a gold prospector like they are.

Like I said I for some crazy reason start research early on and I have at least 1 year and half or 2 years before I hit the road all depending.

Thnx
  • Even off grid your gping to have to pay someone something for parking. NF parks are cheaper, but still cost something. Completely off grid is next to impossible. Water, propane and gasoline are still necessities you cant live without. Figure out another way to camp for free. Camp hosting is a great way to get 30 to 60 days at a park for free.
  • Have you thought about volunteering at a national Park. forest service, state park.
Free spot, water, sewer, electric. lots of different jobs 3-6 month commitment
  • "and put around 1000 amh of a solar battery and solar panel system on"

With a small TT and being alone, 1000 AHs of battery and solar watts may be excessive. I'd wire heavy for additional panels but can't believe you'll need that much of either. I'm "light" at 240 AHs but not by that much. When I buy new batts I'll go 300 AHs and add another panel. Battery weight is also a consideration...tote only what you need.

I see lots of solo RVers and most of the time I are one. You'll be fine.
  • I wouldn't mind one of those pipleline jobs but then again I haven't a clue whats involved or where. This is still a couple years away at the most. I'm still reading, watching youtube videos and trying to learn as much as I can before.
  • I'm a veteran and hope to get Vet medical by then and insurance I believe I should be able to cover no problem. Park fees is what I want to avoid hence reason i'm gonna go solar and off grid. Food is well everyday thing no matter and fuel I reckon depends on how much I move and how far.
  • I assume this trailer is pretty small? Remember towing is NOT all about weights. That trailer becomes a giant sail as you attempt to drive down the road.
As for retiring at 50? Go for it! Medical is going to be your biggest cost. Next will be insurance, food, fuel and park fees. Stsrt now, plan to start camp hosting, or volunteering. As a camp host you can get your site and maybe a small payment in exchange for your time. Sure helps to pay the bills. You might if your of a mind look into seasonal jobs like with a state park system.
