Getting Fuel ?

Taking off on first extended trip. If we use a Pilot (or other big truck stop) gas station for diesel, is there a certain pump area we should use? Should we use the one the semi's are in? We have a 34ft Cougar fiver with a 5 foot scooter extension.
  • First choice: Top off while unhitched. This gives me the option to shop for best price.

Second choice: Flying J. Use the car entrance (for all of the reasons listed above). There are usually 2 RV lanes easily accessible from the entrance ramp, with pumps on either side of the lane. The RV lanes are designed for big rigs to easily move in and out. Pet Peeves: 1)Non-RVers who use the RV lanes because they didn't want to wait 2 minutes in one of the six lanes for cars 2)RVers who leave their rig in the RV lane and go in to shop.

Third choice: Anything it looks like I can get in and out of easily. Since my fill is on the driver side, I look for the far right lane. For me, access is more important than saving 3 cents/gallon.

If you are a Good Sam member, I highly recommend the Flying J card.
  • When we had a diesel we avoided the truck lanes unless there was no other option:
    - Pavement is always covered in diesel.
    - Pumps way too fast and hard to keep from spilling it down the side of the truck.

Unless you are doing a 10-15hr travel day, just fill up before hooking up and standard gas stations work fine.
  • We use regular service stations with diesel ......cheaper than Flying J/Pilot or other trucking centers, cleaner because not as much fuel is spilled due to the high flow nozzles, less congestion.

Getting in/out is not much different than CG sites.

IF you use a trucking center, use the same lanes as semis.......fuel up then get out of the fueling area
  • If you get the Pilot / Flying J RV Plus card, you can start the pump in the truck lanes without going in, and get a discounted price. It saves some time and lets you get out of the way faster. I've never had an issue doing that, had some friendly conversations with drivers too.

The price discount brings them closer to other stations.
  • Yes you can use the semi side. Fill up and get out of the way, so the driver behind you who is making money can fill up. Just remember the semi side the fuel comes out of the nozzle a lot faster. Stay by it so you don't spill fuel all over the ground. Some kick off, some don't.
  • Get an app like Gas Buddy. Find a station that has a decent price, then Google earth the station to see how it looks for in and out.

In general Pilots stations near the highway are priced higher than the surrounding station.

Also, truck lanes at stations are pretty disgusting places. Watch where you step.
  • With our DP we use the truck lanes, but so do our travel companions with their fifth wheel. So you can go either way.....

Most trailers use the RV pumps up front. Many big MHs use the truck lanes. If you can, pull up after fueling and then go in and pay. I've stopped using FlyJ and it's sister company Pilot because I can go three blocks further and save 10-15 cents/gallon X 100. GasBuddy can save you a lot of money.
  • We use findfuelstops.com

We can put in Point A City...to Point B City.

We start looking for fuel at about 150 miles. So Find Fuel Stops will give you the mileage along the way and the Gas Stations.

Click on a Station and you can get the aerial view and sometimes the street view.

Then we know if we can get in and out of there. We don't use Pilot, so hard to get in and out of them. Same with Flying J and Loves, not worth saving 3 cents if there is a pull through station nearby.

You can also click on Diesel for your search.
