Let me know what you guys think of this travel plan

Where is your rig stored. If at home, it might be possible for you to make your first "trip" without pulling out of the drive. That would get you more comfortable with the operation.

If you can't, you'll learn as you go; keep the manual handy. Our first trip was from North Carolina to California and back - an 8-week trip. We felt like experts, when we got home.

If you need to use heat at night, your house batteries should be sufficient to run the furnace. I assume your truck's alternate will be charging them while you drive.

Let me be more specific: Do you mean you're running the gen ALL night?

that was the plan, I assumed that was what it was for.

After reading about staying at rest areas being frowned upon, I am thinking more of finding a cheap camp ground.

Ironically, the week we had taken off to take the maiden voyage was interrupted as our home AC died and we had to be around for the replacement.
It was May and already hot in Alabama so we spent a good bit of time in the RV so I think we are comfortable with the appliances, just not the highway and backing in ... shudder

There are options other than rest stops and Walmart:

Free Campsites

Just remember, they're for overnighting. Not camping.

I hope you have reservations at a campground already.

More and more "rest areas" are posted for no overnight parking.....and the ones that allow it, typically in spaces for big trucks, tend to fill up pretty early in the evening.

If you have a space reserved at the far end and have some flexibility in your intermediate stopping points, you should be fine.

I can run my heat without AC power but need to recharge the batteries the next day, either by driving or by running the gen.

A lot of campers get upset when the camper next to them runs their genny all night.

Your furnace runs on battery, which will be ok if your batteries are in good shape.

Just take your time and you'll be fine. Remember make wide turns, stay below 65mph, leave plenty of room in front of you, use truck side for fueling, if diesel, at truck stops, always have an out and pack some patience. Have fun and enjoy the warm weather, oh never mind we haven't startd winter yet in Alabama.

If you plan to overnight in any Florida rest areas, you are only allowed to park and rest in a Florida rest area for a max. of 3 hrs. Security will wake you up and make you move after 3 hrs. Only commercial vehicles are allowed to overnight.

A whole bunch of people will be traveling on the day after Christmas.
You will have a lot of traffic to put up with.
