New travel trailer owner / used and want to make it my own

Good Afternoon everyone, New to the site and new to RVing. My wife and I just bought a 2005 gulfstream ameri-lite 24bh, weve only camped in it once and there are so many things I want to change already. My biggest question is, is where the main bed is there is a shelf that goes the entire width of the trailer. can a person with some what skills make this into a set of cabinets? Also I have been looking all over the net for replacement Ameri-lite Graphics..any and all help is greatly appreciated

  • You can do whatever you want, but like 2gypsies mentioned, weight is your big concern. You should weigh the camper with the camper loaded for a camping trip. Compare that weight with the total weight the camper can support. If the 2 weights are similar, you don't have much room for extras. Wood can be heavy, so adding cabinets might put you over weight.

Since the bed is in the front of the camper, you have to also be careful that you don't add too much to the trailer's tongue weight. Too much tongue weight for the hitch can be dangerous. To reduce tongue weight, you will need more weight in the rear of the camper.

It is probably doable, just know your weights and your camper's limits. We use a lot of these type of storage organizers to expand shelf space. We use them everywhere in the camper. These are stackable and add a lot of storage to shelves and cabinets. They are also very light.

  • Mine has cabinets across the head of the bed, and I have attached plastic baskets inside of those cabinets to corral all of the little things that otherwise roll around. I actually think about removing the cabinet doors so it's more efficient.
  • Bins, Baskets and Storage Containers from Lowes or Big Lots are your friends. Removable cabinets, if you will. Think creatively. On their side! Stacked inside one another! Add hinges to make lids into doors! Have fun with it.
  • One thing I like to do with tricky projects for the first time is to make a cardboard mock up first. Nothing like seing a physical version before you start sawing and screwing.
  • My advice is to spend a lot of time measuring and thinking things out.
One of the bigger projects I debated for several years was changing our bedroom door, which is always in the way of the bathroom sink, into a slider. I didn't want a hack job and I wanted it to look like it came that way. I evaluated several other plans before diving in and cutting stuff.
It all paid off and it came out perfect but the planning was the key.

Did you buy this to be a perpetual project ? There likely will be enough things crop up that you really NEED to fix that you will soon tire of modifying too many things.

If you tend to be lazy you find creative solutions. My tiny little shower has become a second closet with the simple addition of a bar across the top. There is a LOT of storage space under the bed. On and on.

  • Certainly you can build anything you want if it fits in the space. However, if you're talking about a lot of cabinets be aware of the weight you'll be adding. An overweight RV is a safety hazard and tires will blow out. Find out what the carrying capacity is for your trailer. That would include all your belongings and water if you carry it.
