- Turtle_n_PeepsExplorerI'm learning a lot on this thread! TY!
- Take it back and get a television. That's what you really need. While you can buy a converter box, it's a poor substitute for a television.

Call it what you will, but a screen that has sound, WIFI, several microprocessors, various types of inputs including USB and network and is controlled by a complex remote control is more than a monitor.
Nope! its a monitor! plain and simple. look up the definition. - mobeewanExplorerIn 2006 the government mandated that all televisions/tv's sold must have a tuner period. If it doesn't it is not a tv. If it doesn't have an antenna connection on the back it doesn't have a tuner and cannot legally be called a television.
If your "tv" doesn't have a coax connection on the back, you will need to return it and get a real tv or purchase a stand alone tv tuner to connect between it and the antenna coax.
The link below explains what is going on.
tv-with-no-tuner
From the link:
Make sure the word “TV” is in the product title, as opposed to “Display”, “Home Theater Display”, or “Monitor”. TVs must contain a broadcast TV tuner, by Federal law!
In the TV specs, make sure it has an antenna, “RF”, coax, or cable TV input. Note, not all TVs with this input will list it. So, if you see this input, you’re good. If you don’t see it, you may or may not be good.
Find a photo of the TV’s rear panel (Amazon sometimes has these) and make sure it has the coax round connector like the one shown here: (picture omitted) Note that you are looking for a single round connector, not the set of two or more colored round connectors.
Be extra careful when purchasing a Vizio-branded TV. - Big_KatunaExplorer IICall it what you will, but a screen that has sound, WIFI, several microprocessors, various types of inputs including USB and network and is controlled by a complex remote control is more than a monitor.
- wa8yxmExplorer IIIA Television MUST have some kind of antenna connection. THe standard today is a Coax connection.. long ago it was 2 screws about 1/4-1/2 inch apart on a common insulator.
A "Television" without an antenna input is a MONITOR.. like for a Computer.
You can get a tuner to put in front of the TV for watching TV it will have either HDMI or A/V outputs In fact I likely have one lying about. but not worth the cost of postage. (I got a bunch of 'em a while ago. ONE I'm using One is a spare I do not want to part with and I forget where the remaining unit went. I don't have the remote for it so it's basically useless).
You need one that does both ATSC (Over the air) NTSC (analog cable) and QAM (digital cable) Alas. Mine do not. (ATSC Only I have other devices for the other stuff). - wildtoadExplorer III don’t have direct or dish. My cable box, with coax input, connects to the TV via HDMI. Sat has to have similar outputs. One just has to review current state of the art TV’s at Walmart to see that coax input to TV’s is going the way of buggy whips. Haven’t seen any 300 ohm antenna wire in a while either. I have no idea what the future of OTA TV is but connecting an antenna directly to a TV via coax appears to be on the way out. Not much different than cable providers now requiring a box in many areas.

Without a tuner, it is NOT a TV. Only a monitor. Poor marketing.
While technically true perhaps, once you get to the 4K, ultra HD devices, you won’t find many if any that have a coax input. They may have composit/component input but once again, just as happened when the US went digital, external tuners may be required if you input source isn’t HDMI or USB.
So you're saying 4k/UHD displays can not use an antenna input to receive programming? They never have to change channels? I've never seen an antenna with an HDMI output jack.
I bought a new 4K 55” TV about a year ago and it does not have a tuner or coax input.
It has four HDMI and two Component RCA inputs. .
It is a smart set so you stream Netflix Prime, etc.
Directv and DISH connect with HDMI.
You can buy a OTA DVR if you want OTA. - drsteveExplorer

How do you connect it to DirecTV? - Dutch_12078Explorer III
