- mlts22Explorer III take so many short trips in my TT that I end up using hard-sided gel ice packs, which even if the fridge is functioning like an icebox (i.e. off), it does the job.
With the motorhome I'm looking at, I probably will continue to use the gel ice pack method, but put the fridge to 12 volts, or if running the generator while going down the road, 120 volts for full cooling.
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIHaven't turned ours off for 7 yrs. except to defrost 3X a year
- Ron3rdExplorer IIIWe keep our on all the time when traveling.
- Johno02ExplorerThe only time our is off is while fueling, either gasoline or propane. It is nowhere close to the fuel inlet, but its not a bid idea. Lots safer that the folks you see at the gas pump with a cigarette in their mouth.
- samsontdogExplorerWe travel from Sac Ca to Florence Oregon with the temp over 100 a big part of the way in July with the ref OFF and ice cream is still hard and the beer is cold. Takes about 10 hours with all our stops. No real reason that I leave it off other than I use no propane while it is off. Other times I might travel with it on. Your choice either way whether on or off, makes no difference to the
ref unless you are stopped for a while and the ref is unlevel and ref on
- tenbearExplorerI leave mine on when traveling, but I do turn it off when buying gas. I made a wireless remote on/off switch for it so I can turn it off from the drivers seat. The hard part is remembering to turn it back on.
- empty_nestExplorer"On" while traveling, if I plan to be on the road all day. If it's a shorter, local trip, I get it nice and cold and turn "Off" before we leave. It will keep quite a long time.
- goducks10ExplorerI can't imagine how warm the fridge would be if the outside temps were in the 80-90's and I was on the road for 5-6 hrs. I leave ours on when traveling 100% of the time. It switches to propane when not on elec. Fridge is on the passenger side and fuel fill door is on the drivers side.
- mountainsamExplorerThanks for all your responses. We haven't used an rv for travel since 1978 and a little 18' Road Runner. Last RV we had was a 29 foot R-Vision we had for 3 years. Only time we slept in it was when the power went out in our house for two days. We slept in the rv in the drive way. We had great plans for it but we both worked and week ends were not an option. We had different days of the week off so never got it out. Now retired and hope our plans work out a little better. We are headed for Redding CA. around April 5. Looking forward to breaking in the new 5er.
- korbeExplorerI prefer to turn ours off until we get to our campin spot. My owners' manual says it would be okay to leave it on (except near gas), but for some reason I prefer to have my LPG turned off at the tanks when traveling down the road.
