Taking a vacation from our full time RV life

We are new to RVing and are full timers. We have a dog and some wonderful grandchildren spread out around the world. At times we will want to fly (especially to see the ones in Japan) and need to leave our dog and RV behind. Any ideas or suggestions about how to do this safely? Our dog is our baby so her care is very important to us.

We've been using a boarding kennel for a couple of years now and have been
very happy. I checked out a few before settling on one. The employees are
very caring, love animals - their facilities are top notch. All the animals have
their owns kennel/bed where they sleep at night and they have a very large
area where they socialize/play during the day. No poop anywhere and no pee
    smell.

Never had a problem - but you do have to find the right one.

Only problem we had was on more than one occasion (at different kennels), the girls working there felt so bad for him (he has evil powers of guilt), that they took him home and let him sleep in their bed...then he thought it was OK to sleep in our bed when we got him back.
  • If you won't be gone for more than a week or two, many rv parks and campgrounds also have storage areas available ( no hookups) or if you are renting for a month or longer, would permit you to leave your rv on your site plugged in if you wish. Talk to the owners. They usually don't care as long as the site rent is paid.
  • We can always bribe my neighbors wife with a very good bottle of red wine, and she looks after the dogs and cats, we of course do the same for her "sans the bribe" we reciprocate by taking care of her dog, cats and SeƱor Raven the bird, she works for a vet and she has a raven that has an injured wing and is incapable of flight, good to have X-NAVY and active NAVY neighbors, San Diego is a NAVY town.

    So I say

    GO NAVY

  • As stated, leave pup with a trusted friend/relative or doggie hotel and RV in storage. You don't say how long you will be gone each time. We always use a trusted doggie hotel-MIL would always offer to watch our dogs but we never trusted her to give them back! :B

P.S.-please no lecturing or horror stories about using a boarding facility. It's a tough enough decision without the "I never" crowd making it worse.
  • This why we let our fur buddy go permanently with a friend after she borrowed him for a winter when we were overseas.

    RV storage lots are everywhere.
  • Well, that can be hard. Couple of suggestions you might have already considered:

    1. leave dog with family here in the states ... kids, nephews, cousins, etc. RV in a storage lot (we have used a month-month lot on occasion) and off you go.

    2. dog to a highly rated doggie hotel and RV to storage lot.

Other than that, I don't know what options there are.
