- SkattrackerExplorerI have a 2007 F250 6.0. I traded in a 2002 F350, V10 on it. I like the truck but had been in shop twice in first year I owned it. I sure missed my reliable V10, but after the second time I had mine completely bulletproofed and now all has been good. I do have a friend that works on these a lot and does bulletproofing and he looked at it before I bought it and I bought it for $5-6K less than the Duramax or Chevy. Now I have the same in as I would of a Duramax or Cummins. Yes, I know my resale is not as good.
- azjeffhExplorerI just put $9K into my 6.0 (130k miles) :M Turned out to be the best choice since we'll have a F450 in a few years but didn't want to spend the money now.
Yeah, the 6.0 is a great engine :@ - Chevyman2006ExplorerI have a 2006 Duramax with 42k miles, just had the turbo replaced last week. Probably just a fluke, but still $2500.
I know literally over 100 owners of Ford 6.0's that have had major issues. That's between friends/ private owners and fire departments/ ambulance companies.
One thing that I have noticed...probably 75% of those with problems had the 2003.5 or 2004 model trucks. It seems that the 2005+ trucks were much better, but still had the EGR coolers issues and sometimes the headbolts.
Again, maintenance is key. Although the Ford to me is a better looking truck...the risk versus reward for me just isn't worth it to take a chance on a 6.0. - FrostbitteExplorerUnless the Ford 6.0 has been fixed to address all the problems that motor has had, then it should be fine. Otherwise, I'd go with a Duramax. But before anyone of them, I went with a Cummins. :D

We just tried to trade in a 06 duramax on a new diesel. The truck has a lot of miles but is still in good shape - Ford would only give us $6,000 for it and Chev $13,000. Big difference
Ford is use to having to discount used 6.0 PSD, they think the Dmax is just as bad, Chevy knows better.
How many miles?? - ngreenExplorerWe just tried to trade in a 06 duramax on a new diesel. The truck has a lot of miles but is still in good shape - Ford would only give us $6,000 for it and Chev $13,000. Big difference

How about the Ford 6.7. We just bought a new F350. Reading the 6.0 horror stories worries me about the new engine. I don't mean to hijack the thread.
I'm not impresses. I see a lot of blown engines here. Blown fuel pumps are the least problems of these engines.
Wow not fun reading in that forum!!
It is the "Engine Problems" section, but many of those stories are just flat scary.
Reading the post to your link, seems that possible cause is engine shutdown during regen when EGT temps and valves are very hot. Maybe a cool down timer so engine won't shutdown if in regen.
I have thought of installing a shutdown timer on my 01, but just do it by watching my EGT before shutting down. I sure get some strange looks when I get out of the truck still running and gather my stuff before reaching and turning off after EGT drops below 300 degrees.
That is certainly one persons opinion, but I don't agree.
If it was as simple as letting the engine cool off Ford could write a simple software change to do this to fix the problem. That would be cheap and easy. They aren't, they are tearing the engines down and putting in new valves which is SUPER expensive and difficult to do.
The valves are junk in this engine and they are starting to pop like popcorn.
Look at Fords, TSB: 13-05-09 for details. 13-05-09
Look at post #16.
More reading about this TSB valve mess.
The thing that is really worrisome it the fact the TSB goes from 2011 through 2013! :E That is bad news. - fly-boyExplorerBought a brand new loaded 6.0- when it ran it was awesome!
After 58 days in the shop within the first year of ownership I was tickled to have Ford pick it up and send me a check for it.
Why anyone would even consider purchasing a 6.0 is beyond me! My issue cost me nothing because it was all covered under warranty- minus the inconvenience of being stranded three times with my trailer, and the loss of the truck...
Under no circumstance would I ever recommend anyone consider a used 6.0- and I respect and admire the Ford Company. Fact is- the motor is a piece of junk! - shum02Explorer250K kms/150K miles on my 6.0L. Batteries, brakes, shocks, alternator, couple of serpintine belts, tires, U-joints - just regular wear items..................engines?? then again I've heard that Cdn diesel fuel really goes a long way to helping diesel trucks up here. Actually nothing on my truck made by FMCO has actually broke or needed to be repaired.
Wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Best truck I've ever owned.
Read all about the "horror" stories but considering how many of these Ford built it's really hardly any at all.
As usual YMMV. - garry_owenExplorersad story her but true;
the dealers around here had a kinda net work for different brands of used vehicles . pu trucks in particular.
my favorite dealer and happens to a friend, had two fairly new fords diesels for sale. quite a discount.
i stopped to look at them and see what was up. why 2 new lower mile diesel so cheap? when looking for my dura-max i had scoured the country for a good chev or gmc that hadn't been hopped up, in the oil field, coal mines, or just run out on miles. couldn't find good used and ended up going new.
any way i asked him why so cheap on the fords.
his answer "the ford dealers won't take them from us any more. we have to drop the trade price we allow our customer in hopes we can turn them, or send to the auction. means we have to pay below auction for trade and the original ford customer takes the hit"
not saying good or bad one way or the other.
am saying if you do go with a ford, do research in your area. make sure you don't pay $30000 or so for a truck thats only bringing $12000 at auction.
don't be the guy that has to take the ford hit.
