IMO, at that time of night one should look for a highway rest area or a truck stop or a parking lot. One should not inflict discomfort on others due to one's own PPP (Poor Prior Planning).

Don't assume that.
i've done late arrivals at commercial parks, told them I was coming in late and they would assign a site and tell me the procedure. In one case, a KOA I was coming to about an hour after closing, the said they would stay up until we got there; owner-operators known personally. This arrangement usually involves prepaying, so you don't come in while closed, leave before they open, and not pay.

That late we are sleeping in wally world or a truck stop etc. CG we aim to arrive before dark. Too many variables to plan on late CG arrival unless you are familiar with the site already.
We don't want to be the ones pulling in late and creating an annoyance for people wanting to sleep.
And I don't want to run over obstacles maneuvering in the dark

The two public campgrounds I use most often close the gate at 10pm to stop drive-throughs. They have one-way tire traps for emergency exit. This is pretty common in the areas where I camp. - VeebyesExplorer IIHad the very late arrival thing recently. Mr Inconsiderate shows up at the very full CG at 11PM with his noisey Ford, it might have been Cummins diesel, then proceeds to drive up & down the lanes looking for an empty site.
Complete thoughtlessness for others.
To top it off, next morning a group. of Harley riders find it necessary to depart at 6AM waking everyone for miles around. - Jim_ShoeExplorerI understand the reasons for arriving late and disturbing others. But it isn't an excuse. If something makes you late for your reservation, call the CG and tell them. Stuff happens. They may tell you to come ahead. They may also tell you what time they open the next morning. The operators as well as the other guests require sleep, too.
- down_homeExplorer IIAt a recent rally, we arrived very late. We had the access code and got in. We weree careful to just idle along not wanting to disturb Folks already asleep.
Fortunately there were two couple out walking for exercise. They helped us locate the poorly marked site. I apologized to the neighbors next morning but fortunately they were gracious and said they were not bothered. If there had been any place to stay the night we would have stopped there rather than go in so late. Didn't see any place. - Ron3rdExplorer III

No, some have a gate to keep people out after hours. We usually plan ahead and aren't still looking at that hour.
True, in some CGs you can't get in after hours, but in many State CGs you can. A common tactic is you'll hear a rig pull in at 1:00 in the morning and is gone before 6:00 am when the rangers arrive at the gate. Free overnight stay.
