Any KOA work kampers?

Any KOA work kampers here? Wondering what happened to the KOA Work Kamper Forum on their website?

Ever WK at Baton Rouge KOA? Would you recommend it? Would you go back?

Thanks,

Ray
  • We did two seasons of KOA workamping. One was a franchise and one was a corporate campground. DW and I decided it was not really for us. The hours promised really didn't materialize, the site, while discounted, still cost, but primarily I just didn't fit the skill set required. They seem to usually want the men to do the outside maintenance work while the ladies work the reservations and the desk. I didn't mind delivering firewood, escorting campers to their sites, patrolling in the evenings to help enforce the rules, and even occasionally cleaning a bathroom, but I am not well versed in electrical work, plumbing, etc. and I absolutely detest yard work. My own sticks and bricks has a black lava rock yard so I have no mowing or edging! This, plus the fact that we were working during the best times to travel and enjoy our motor home, while sitting at home during the times when many of the attractions are closed or inaccessible pointed us toward doing our work at Amazon during their peak season. We have done that for 3 years and will begin our 4th this year. Works for us.
  • Can't really speak to any of your direct questions, But I can tell you Baton Rouge would be a furnace in the summer. Good ole Red Stick probably averages 100 plus with only the 90% humidity keeping it from going higher. Toss in a few dozen severe thunder storms, termites the size of a small SUV and giant mounds of Fire Ants and you have my vision of hell on earth. Oh, and if you are in to the great outdoors, you run a great chance of running into every poisonous snake native to North America. Hence why we vacate Texas for Montana and Wyoming every summer.
  • Daytime temps average 90 to 92 June, July, and August. The nights average 20 degrees cooler. Summer rains are welcome in this area. We do have a few red ants but with regular baiting they do not pose a problem. Termites are not a problem. Snakes have all pretty much been eaten and we are now working on the gators.

Things are always bigger when Texans tell it. I was born there and did some growing there.
  • Thanks, We are headed to WY for the summer and LA would be fall and winter. Sorry should have made that clear.
  • We did two winters in LA at a wildlife refuge...the weather was very pleasant.
  • workatkoa is the link for the workamper site.

We have worked three summers for KOA. We would go back to another KOA given the right situation. Every one is different. Some deals are great, some are not right for us. If you communicate clearly up front, and have realistic expectations it can work for you and for the campground. Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask if the deal is a flexible one. We have been happy in every situation, but we have also learned along the way what we want, and what we don't. If the campground isn't willing/able to give us what we need, we look elsewhere. But once we commit, we stay the course. We have watched others leave early and leave the campground in a bind, causing us to have to work more than we agreed upon.
  • We are seasonal this year at a KOA and will follow this thread in case we decide to work camp in the future.
