I started a thread about this in the Class C forum, but figured it would be good info for the entire RV community. I have always been a fan of Michelin tires, until we picked up an immaculate, low mile Class C two days ago. The rig is a 25ft 2010 Four Winds Chateau with 10k miles on it and always fully covered when not in use and looks new. The tires are original to the unit and are severely dry rotted. We purchased this rig from the original owner who was meticulous about keepping the rig in top shape, although they have not used it in over a year due to his wifes illness which is why he sold it.Today I am going to see of the only Michelin dealer in our small town can find out if Michelin will do anything about it. But I am not holding my breath. One of the manuals that came with the rig says Michelin does not cover dry rot. I checked the date codes and it appears to be they were built the 19th week of 2009. Below are three pics. This is crazy for a covered unit that is only 3 years old.....Right rear tire....Left rear....Left front...

I will just only add that you have NO idea how this MH was stored/parked.Leave ANY tire out in the sun in Florida not covered and you will find the same problem on any brand tire. Why do you think they sell tire covers?And lastly you knew these tires looked this way when you bought it and you knew you would need to replace them before using it, so the problem is? :?

Is it possible while he was meticulously maintaining it that he used some type of treatment on the tires to make them shine? Some of that stuff will definitely cause tire damage.

rockhillmanor, did you even read the post??? The rig was FULLY COVERED EXCEPT WHEN IN USE. The rig still shines like the day it was purchased. The owner is splitting the cost with me on new tires.

This is crazy for a covered unit that is only 3 years old.....Left front...The date code on the tire above is 1809 - indicating that Ford got tires made in the 18th week of 2009 to mount on the rims, that where mounted on this chassis sometime in 2009 or 2010. then the chassis is shipped to the manufacture, who then installed a 2010 body on it, and could have sold it as soon as August 2009. Basically the tires are now 4 years old. They typically will last about 7 years but you did not seem to get that much service out of this set. Because they are not covered in the sun? Who knows. Perhaps to much tire treatment that reacted with the tires?My tires are a bit older and do not look that bad, and I never treated them, or covered them. Fred.

Totally agree. There are a few posters that "have to control" every subject. They are so smart they have to let everyone know their intelligence level. They analize every word to the umpteenth degree. I would never offer advise on this forum because of this abuse. I belong to other forums that have nothing like the abuse you have to put up with here.

I'm just saying that a title of "Beware of Michelins" is an aggressive way to title something and then to follow it up with unknown facts of the use or treatment of tires that are 4 years old. Maybe something along the lines of how he titled the same subject in the Class C forum, would of gotten the more favorable results for him as it did there.

If he had definitive reasons of why the tires were like that and Michelin should of done something and didn't, then fine, beware of Michelin!

After reading all 8 pages I decided to look at profiles. The OP has posted 99 times in 8 years. Seems like a guy that simply asks a question now and then and minds his own business. For this he gets attacked. His primary attacker has 14,000 posts in 10 years. Draw your own conclusions.

The almost 9 year old Toyos taken off my MH. Had almost zero cracks inside and out. I personally inspected them when the dealer removed them. Yes the new tires were Toyos.

I have seen The M. tires cracked like that and it scares me.
No tire 4 years old should crack like that. I have been buying tires for a couple years and never seen any other brand do that.

Regards to the quote above, on his other thread he states he's 'going to buy Toyo Tires anyway', then miraculously he gets almost free tires from Michelin in the middle of both of these threads when he is questioned.

NO one is attacking this poor OP. He's running 2 threads on the same subject and talking out of the east and west. You ask him a question about the post and he's bobbing and weaving. Then he starts another thread on the 'same' subject in the Class C forum and starts bad mouthing the forum members from General RV'ing?

Had NOTHING to do with the fact the tires were Michelin, had to do with nothing adding up.

Then OP wanted Michelin to replace them, and digressed from there with the OP calling anyone that replied to his post idiots, clowns, etc.

Then when the OP didn't get the coddling he wanted here he opened another thread on the same subject on the Class C forum and started bashing the General RV'ing forum from there. No one attacked this OP most merely asked questions to clarify inconsistencies in the story and the op got defensive and then inflammatory.

Perhaps the OP could post a copy of the infamous receipt for those almost free tires he so valiantly fought for and won. Since he vehemently denied that this post was about getting free tires.

I can only tell you about the problem we had with our Goodyear 670's. They were less than 6 years in use (Less than 7 by Date code) and only had 52,000 miles on them when we replaced the rear tires. We hadn't seen any problems but decided to replace them when it was convenient for us. Imagine our surprise when they took off the rear tires and we found a sidewall crack more than 5/16 inch wide between the two tires. We had already decided to replace them with Michelin through FMCA.

Where the cracks were had not seen the light of day and the coach was driven very regularly after we purchased it in 2007. At most the coach could have sat for 1 year on the lot prior to purchase based upon manufacture date of the tire.

The coach has been four corner weighed at least every 24 months and the tire pressure checked at least twice a month. I don't know what else we could have done to take care of the tires any better.

That said, we still have two Goodyears on the front and 4 Michelin on the rear. For us, it was about the cost and date of manufacturer we were able to find when it was time to replace. In a year or so, we will be replacing the front two tires and again it will depend upon what is available at that time. By the way, the reason we got out of sync on replacing all six tires was due to earlier road damage on one front tire and we decided to buy two matching tires at that time.

As to why this thread got so out of hand versus the same subject on another forum - intentionally or not, I do believe the tone of this thread was more aggressive and confrontational from the first post and title. Unfortunately after that, it just got worse.

Bottom line, I'm happy that it worked out for the original poster and that Michelin was made aware of the situation.
