Cable Tv in Rv Parks

I'm not sure if this is covered but here goes anyway.
My DW and I are planning on snowbirding for the first time in the fall of 2017. I have been researching campgrounds in AZ. I'm finding a lot that look suitable for long term stays except they don't have cable Tv and some no WIFI.
Is this because most snowbirds go for satellite Tv?
If this is the case, which system is best?
Thanks

  • From my experience, if you really watch much TV you will generally not be happy with park cable. Some are not too bad, many are. Bad, that is.

If near a large city, then OTA can be pretty good. Otherwise, Dish's monthly pay as you go plan is very good.
  • My RF Mogul dish can be converted from DTV to Dish. You might inquire about Shaw conversions - is Shaw your Canadian provider? The LNB, arm and firmware are changed. But portable dishs are certainly less expensive.

BTW My crystal ball suggests I could receive DTV Seattle locals in Vancouver Island and a trip there this summer is being discussed.
  • Since the OP is from Canada he won't be using a home sat receiver in AZ. But look into pay by the month type plans.

CG cable can be marginal. OTA can be good in the Phoenix area. Even if CG WiFi is adequate for you it likely won't be secure.

We dropped the home phone, use cell phones and the Verizon Jet pack and have good reception throughout the states. For $15/mth we add Canadian cell service when in Canada.

We also use a DVR sat receiver and move it from home to rig but this won't work for a Canadian snowbird. BTW We got the DTV non local channels throughout Alberta, the Alaskan Highway and Alaska, locals were never requested for Alaska.
  • Many RV parks have what I call "RV park cable" or especially "RV park Wi-Fi". That means they have it to advertise that they have it. Only problem is that the cable picture is fuzzy and the Wi-Fi does not allow one to get on the internet. We find this case many times. We have Direct TV at home so we take a receiver from the house. That and OTA TV works great. As far as Wi-Fi we have the verizon jey pack. That way we have internet access that also is secure. as we do baking etc with it. We never rely on the park. If it is there and works so much the better.
  • In part because of the wide variations in the availability and quality of park cable and WiFi services, we opted several years ago for a DISH satellite system and cell based hotspot Internet service. Only rarely do we bother to hook up to a park's cable or WiFi now.
  • as far as best sat. service, doesn't really matter. Direct has a NFL game service available if you want to spend the $$$$$. I have had Dish for many years.
very little good on OTA TV service IMHO. on sat. I have NFL, Big 10, etc. channels.
