- LynnmorExplorerDid you ever wonder why the fuel taxes need to help support the buses, trains and airports, but riders of those don't support the highways? Ticket prices for any and all systems should completely support that conveyance. Of course that would never happen because of political forces.

Good morning Murphysranch. I can't comment much on the politics of the state as we are not residents although we do own property there and pay taxes. However, re preferences between plane and fast train. I think you would find that the majority of folks who have travelled fast trains would pick fast trains over planes pretty much always. It is just a much nicer experience in terms of comfort, stress, convenience etcetera. Especially on something like a run from SanFrancisco to LA. Of course this is just my humble opinion.
I also think that most people would prefer a loaded Bentley to a Kia SUV. The difference is that very few people can afford that Bentley. I don't think that the government should be subsidizing these things. If you absolutely HAVE to get there fast, you have an option. If you have to just plain get there, you have mass transit options. - spoon059Explorer II

Second of all, the only people who call Canada's health care system free are Americans. Canadians are well aware that our health care is not free. The vast majority are just happy we have one. Yes it is a cultural difference. Our culture believes that health care is a right. Other cultures consider it a privilege. Neither is right or wrong but consider being respectful when speaking to neighbours and other cultures and not talking down to them. That is just bad manners.
Well said. I happen to be in the camp that healthcare is a PRIVILEGE, but I respect your opinion. - dodge_guyExplorer II

Here's a different take other than the political bilge in the OP web clicky on the same subject.
Roads/bridges/etc all across the country are in bad need of repairing.
I see on a couple of trucking news websites I frequent CA highways and bridges have been a big source of complaints from CA based private truck owners/operators and CA trucking companies and their drivers.
IF my state will improve roads and bridges within the state with a fuel tax increase I'm all for it.
Except they already had tax for that and it got used elsewhere. now they have a new tax that will end up doing the same thing. how many times do they think the citizens of the state are going to fall for that?! - John___AngelaExplorer

The Western states have never been too hot on mass transportation. Having had the "pleasure" of traveling for work I will say the health of mass transportation on the East Coast is not bad at all. I found much more enjoyable to take a train from DC to NYC, more room power and FREE WiFi so I could easily work during the trip. Train arrived Penn Station, and could easily catch a subway to within a block of my hotel.
The westerns states are too spread out, as are the workplaces - in the cities, most folks ride-share ... the rest park & ride, and those that need a vehicle, drive. No easy answer, but mass-transit only works in small, defined areas.
LA to SF might work, but SF has a good bus system downtown, LA does not - but UBER may add a little edge to LA as UBER in some areas works very well as long as the traffic does not interfere with scheduling.
Yes, but the way I understand it this is hot a mass transit project in any way shape or form. This is a high speed rail project, essentially transportation in lieu of or to augment air travel or road travel. Even if they go with old generation technologie this is a 300 KMH rail line. If they go with the latest technology it will be north of 350 to 400 KMH. - hpdrverExplorerTexas is in the process of building a high speed rail from Dallas to Houston with no public money. It is being built through private investors. Unlike California, no tax money is to be used. Look at Texascentral.com

- down_homeExplorer IILot of money for a few Riders. The idea of cross country trains sound goo but how are you going to get the demand to match the capacity? However if it will pay for itself then do it. Forcing the whole of Citizenry to pay for the benefit of the few will not work with those numbers.
A whole lot of Californians will be leaving along with more businesses.
They will be stuck supporting one quarter of Mexico's population and expecting us and the few remaining to pay for it. Washington and us refuse to pay for Gov Moonbeam's Dope Smoking Marxist Utopia. he looks and acts exactly like Venezuela's Dictator. - John___AngelaExplorer

I'm a Californian, and I'm furious about this new tax. Yes, all the extra has been swiped for the Bullet train, which is sooo stoopid. SW air just announced a whole bunch of new routes outa Sacramento and with fares so cheap, why would anyone want to take a fast train? And yes the Lottery - they also swiped that money from the schools. Our Moombean Gov is very good at "reallocating"....
