Camping alone

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, a strong marriage is a strong marriage.

I retired five years ago, DW retired at the end of 2014. During those five years I have spent about 600 nights camping. It occasionally gets a little lonely but for the most part I have enjoyed it and DW who was the CEO of her company and worked long hours didn't mind. Since she has retired I have curtailed my travels but plan to resume traveling next year. I like to camp host and volunteer, something she isn't interested in. She does plan to spend some time traveling with me in the future but probably not for long stints. It works for us but may not be for everyone. In the course of our 46+ years together we have been apart about six years for military and jobs related issues so we knew what to expect.

If your spouse has a full life and doesn't need you for entertainment or to keep loneliness at bay, then time apart is not a problem. I've been taking separate vacations for 30 plus years with no harm done. I enjoy camping alone, not isolation so much, as just being able to completely relax on my schedule and no one else's other than nature's. Campground people are so friendly there's always social interaction throughout the day. Depends on what you are trying to accomplish and your relationship.

I've never known anyone in the military to be deployed "alone", without family yes, but not alone, even the smallest, most specialized units are usually deployed in teams.

"One" is a very lonely number. I would not wish it on my wife, nor on myself.

Where do I sign up and when can I start?

I always camp alone, normally 10 to 15 days at a time, several times each year. But the days are used fishing so I never have a chance to get bored. But when it rains and I'm stuck inside it can make for a long day.

Those 4 months were from October to February through a north Idaho winter; low temp was -15 F. Maybe it was missing Christmas and New Year’s or the low temp. and winds that kept me inside but I got cabin fever!!!!

You tested full-timing the incorrect way. Full-timers don't spend their winters in -15F temps. They enjoy the sun of the southern states. You can be outdoors all winter long and many times in shorts. :)

I'm with AJBert, Dh was in the military and did lots of deployments and when he retired, I joined the Red Cross and also did lots of deployments, temp jobs and some solo overseas assignments. We got married in 62 and still going strong. If one of us wants to go camping and the other can't as life getting in the way, we go and enjoy.
