Can I tow a '92 Geo Tracker 4x4 Automatic Trans four down?

As many of you have seen in my prior posts, my '93 Suzuki Sidekick manual transmission was damaged and I am now looking to replace it. Can anyone confirm that I can tow a '92 Geo Tracker 4x4 with an automatic transmission four down? Please advise and thanks.

  • The Automatic Hubs work fine as long as You run the vehicle in D 2 WD before placing the transfer case in Nuetral and the Tranny in Park!

It's when You have it in 4 WD before shifting the transfer case to neutral that You create a problem .

Just drive the car around for a hundred feet or so in 2 WD before hooking it up!

    X2 Great little tow cars
  • Tow bar yes.
You need to check to see if there is a white sticker with a 4-6 digit number on brackets. It maybe hard to get an adapter without having one made.
1.125 square inserts are common for Roadmaster. Go to their website to see if that is what you have. Roadmasterinc.com
  • Thanks for all of the great input. In looking at the tow setup, there are two square pieces that are welded to the frame with holes. I have a Stowmaster tow bar on my 94 Suzuki Sidekick, can that be adapted to work on the 92 Geo Tracker? As always thanks in advance for your assistance!
  • Yes, it can be towed four down.
Make sure it has or you will need manual locking hubs. Some were not equipped with locking hubs.
Transfer case in neutral, transmission in park. Stop every 250 miles and run transmission in drive.
  • Been there. Done that. Key to off, but not lock. Manual hubs in freewheel. Transmission in park. Transfer case in neutral.
Every 200 miles or less: Start engine, put transmission in drive, and run for a minute. This is necessary to lube the transfer case occasionally. It does not splash lube unless being turned by the engine. Put transmission back in park, stop engine, and continue on.
While lubing the transfer case I leave the driver's door open so I don't forget to take the necessary action to continue towing.
I bought my Sidekick with 35k miles on it and sold it with 125k miles on it. No transfer case issues.
BTW the auto is a chevy trans. Chevy parts will fit and are much cheaper than Suzuki parts. Plugs, seals, etc.
  • Yes, but you have to have manual hubs installed. Towed a 96 for years.
