CB radio aerial extension cord

I want a short extension cord for my CB radio and think this one is it, but I am no longer sure of the numbers.
MPD Digital rg58-n-male-SO239-10FT RF Coaxial Cable N Male to UHF SO239 Female RG-58u MIL-C-17 Coax with N Male to SO-239 pl259 Female Connectors
anybody sure of this?
thanks,
bumpy

  • Take just the CB radio to a Radio Shack store. Explain what you are trying to do. They should be able to give you the proper cable. It is just like a garden hose you need a cable with fittings on the ends to match your existing radio and cable that goes to the antenna. It should be very easy if you just take the radio to an electronics store like Radio Shack.
  • Radio Shacks still exists in most medium to large sized cities and they should have what you need. If it is a bit longer than you really need that is OK.

Not all CBs have the standard cable connections that they should have.
  • No. That is the wrong cable. You don't want anything with N connectors. In CB radio connections the female (the one on the radio) is an SO-239. The male (the cable that plugs into the radio) is a PL-259. I have no idea who came up with such a complicated nomenclature, probably Motorola. Anyway, you need a cable with an SO-239 on one end and a PL-259 on the other.
Or, you could get a cable with a PL-259 on both ends (far more common) and a double SO-239 to couple them together. These are more commonly called "barrel connectors."
Depending on the design of the antenna altering the length of the feed line may cause a problem. It's hard to say without knowing what antenna you have.

There are a couple things to consider: 1) If your CB antenna is designed to not need a groundplane e.g. flat metal surface to be mounted on, then the factory coax is likely to a specific length designed to compensate for that lack of a metal ground plane. Adding an arbitrary length of coax will could impair that factory match.
)2 It is probable that your CB transceiver has an SO-239 coax receptacle on it, and that the coax end has a PL-259 coax male plug to fit that receptacle. Assuming that is the case, you really don't need to complicate things by getting a cable with N connectors and adding adapters....... just get a nice length of RG-58, or RG-8X with an SO-239 female on one end and a PL-259 on the other.
I tend to use amateur radio suppliers such as DX Engineering, The Wireman, and many others for such items .... but I suppose if you want to pinch pennies you may need to go with your proposal including adapters which may be cheaper on Amazon than the more simple and suitable assembly I described.

don't understand your point. it looks to me like that referenced item is in fact basically what you are recommending. no adapters involved.
