Changing TT steps.

The steps are welded to the frame; Northwoods does this because, for them it's faster and cheaper then bolting the steps to the frame.
This means you have to get under and grind lots of stuff away, in fact you have to destroy the steps to remove them.
When I installed the replacement steps, I bolted them. That meant drilling holes in the frame for the bolts. But that was better for me then welding.

I've also used a wood platform (about 2-1/2 inches tall) to reduce the "first step".

Lastly Torklift makes an improved handle you might want to look into. We really love ours.

Yeah, the main problem I had was the proximity of the sidewall to the frame. I had to be careful I didn't cut the sidewall along with the frame. :) I couldn't easily get to all the mounting bolts for the frame so I had to trim it in situ rather than removing it, which would have made for an easier job.

And you gotta love cordless tools, they just make life so much easier. No more dragging out that long extension cord for one little job.

I had to modify mine, but it was no big deal. All you need is a tape measure, a marker and a Sawzall.

I just replaced the 3-step on our 5th wheel toyhauler with the Quadrastep 4-step. It puts the first step closer to the door, and the other steps are closer together and puts the last step a little closer to the ground.

It does make a noticeable difference. Peggy thought it was pretty much not necessary until I actually installed it. Then she thought it was wonderful as it makes climbing in and out much easier for her.

Be advised that you may need to do some work to the mounting frame to make it work since it has a rod that sticks out the side for one of the steps. It moves in an arc and will foul the mounting frame on some units. I had to trim the heck out of my mounting frame to make it work. Worth it though all in all.

I have stayed on a few sites where I had to dig out the dirt to open my third step because the site was not level. That may or may not be an issue for you.

"vandave".....depending how you use the TT and how often, how about making an overlay step out of aluminum or wood with 4 or 5 steps that you can quick connect to the open or closed step. It might give you an opportunity to make one exactly like you want.

Leave the current step attached and closed and make a nice one that clamps or pins on.

I did it and it makes a huge difference -- especially for that first step up off of the ground.
