Disconnecting dolly and vehicle

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question but as a new motorhome owner, I have a lot of seemingly silly questions. I'm wondering at what point when arriving at a campground should tow dolly be disconnected. I'm guessing that this is another "that depends" sort of answer but what is the conventional wisdom on this? I realize that backing up with a tow dolly attached to a MH is very difficult and is discouraged in most of what I've read so far.

Thanks in advance.

  • Steve what I often see here in the Northwest is people drop their car off the dolly at the entrance to the campground. Some then move the dolly to the back of their car to tow through the campground others just pull up to their site and remove the dolly at that point. Since most campgrounds are single lane one way they don't want to block for long, thus why they drop the car at the front of the campground.

At least in the Oregon parks they will come down hard if you're dolly or any vehicle isn't parked on the asphalt they don't want any on the ground.
  • That is all very good and useful advice! Thank you all very much!

  • Yes, it all depends. On the space around you and your campsite. I think backing up a dolly with out the car on would be very challenging, think of a Very short trailer, quick to jackknife.
Easiest way I found was to put a swivel dolly wheel on the tounge and just push it.

  • If you have the ACME dolly and you need to store it you can unhook it, roll it to the back of the cg site and if needed stand it straight up. Obviously you need to make sure it will not fall over and hurt you or your mh. When I had my ACME and had a back in site I would unhook it and just roll it to the back of the site. Like you said it depends.
  • First I try to get a pull-thru campsite, which makes things very easy. If not, I usually unload the car at the office/registration area and the DW drives the car in. When I get to the campsite, I park the motorhome at the end of the site, remove the dolly and push it to the back of the site. I then back the motorhome in so the rear of the motorhome is over the tongue of the dolly. Good luck.
  • That is a it depends question. If there is room on the street in front of where you are parking, then I would unhook there. That gives you a space to put the dolly once the car is off. If the streets are not wide enough there is usually room at the office / registration center to unhook. It is only not good to back up with the car on the dolly. Once the car is off you can back up with the dolly attached to the motorhome.

    Have safe travels.
