Displaying American flag during hours of darkness

After camping 26 of the last 36 months, I think this subject needs addressing. I am a proud American veteran and have met many other veterans in my travels. It warms my heart to see the American flag prominently on display throughout many campgrounds. However, I am disheartened when I see the flag improperly displayed after dark. Please illuminate your flag after dark or store it until dawn and then put it back on display.

There is a little something called the Flag Code. Not a law but a guideline. it is how we respect our flag.

Lighting after dark is part of it
NO use of the flag as clothing (Though for Military and selected civilian (Police, fire, ems) a Flag Patch is ok.
Position of the flag when flown with other flags
position of flag when hung on a wall or from a messenger cable (A wire or rope cable runing across a road) as opposed to a flag pole
    Position of flag on pole
Disposal of old worn or torn flag
Flag not to touch the ground

    ANd so on.

Look it up. Use your favorite search engine to find it.
  • I am not the flag police but I do understand the feelings of those here. I for one do not fly a flag at my RV because I can not illuminate it, or rather won't illuminate it so therefore I don't fly it. I also take acception with people who wear the flag as clothing. I also do not like the variations of the flag with the blue or black strip in it. Our nations flag is not to be altered no matter who it supports. Make your own flag. I keep my mouth shut though when I see these things. To each his own I suppose. People need to read the paper that comes with their flag.

I have flown a flag at my residence since I built my house and I am not trying to prove my nationalism/patriotism. In fact, I'm not trying to prove anything. I just love my country and like flying the American flag. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do have two solar lights on my flag that come on at sunset and run all night.
  • Well I am a 31 year, two war (vietnam/kuwait), combat infantry vet and every time I see a flag on a vehicle or residence, I think there is someone who is trying to prove their nationalism/patriotism. I always wonder why they feel they need to prove it.

They are like those guys that come up to me and say I wish I could have served but....or I was in the ...... and did not get to go to...... it all does not matter to me. I will defend the flag burner as well as the flag waver. Neither one has my respect but they have their rights under the constitution. That is what I swore to protect and defend.
  • There's a guy at the Q who flies a confederate flag. I don't think I wanna know what that's about.
  • Dad is a vet and displays his flag on a flagpole attached to the house, but it's under an overhang. At night it's not illuminated however.

When I display the flag at our camper, it's on a PVC flagpole that can rotate with the wind. Two solar powered LED lights illuminate it after dark. When I am not there, I put the flag in storage.

X2. I would rather see the flag displayed without a light than not have it displayed.
  • I have mine up 24/7, I added a solar light from day one. I replace them at the first sign of wear.

American Flag always, below that STL Cardinals March - October, Mizzou Tigers the balance...
  • My flag is up 24/7 when camping and it has a red/blue/green flashing strobe on top of the pole for nighttime. It is able to display two 3x5 flags. Flags are on a 22' long pole and it's a pain to put up and take down so I leave it up.

I've had one person disagree with one of my flags, which is the blue stripe flag but everyone else is for it. I also display the red stripe flag when my SIL is camping with us.

One thing I've noticed when reading the US Flag Code is the use of the word should, rather than shall. The US Flag Code has no teeth leaving prosecution to the states, which obviously don't.

  • I agree completely. All it takes is a solar light or two if the flag is near the ground. I use a 16' pole from flag buddy and it has a solar light on top to illuminate it after dark.
