- rjncatExplorerDittos for the CoolTech harness. Works great on our JK
RJ - phaysExplorerI added extra bulbs to my Jeep Liberty for tail/brake lights and wired two LED's for the license plate to the tail light wire. I don't like to tow at night but on the few times that I have the license plate is lit.
- discovery4usExplorerThe tail lights on my jeep TJ are also the light for my license plate so I do have a license plate light by default.

..If this is truly required, I'd bet that 99.9% of all toad setups are illegal, then.
In all the wiring kits I've seen, and RV technicians I've talked to over the years that set up toad wiring...Not ONCE have I ever heard mention of ANY wiring done to make the toad's license plate lights work.
Toad setups are almost always done in one of 3 ways (and none of these 3 involve wiring in license plate lights):
1. Magnetic lights
2. Separate bulbs installed and wired into tail lights
3. Existing tail lights wired up to work from MH, using diodes
Suffice it to say, if this (not having working license plate lights on a toad) is illegal, then almost ALL of us are illegal and have been for a very long time. I find that a bit hard to believe. :)
Personally, I have much more important things to worry about..
OR....you use none of the above and instead a COOLTECH plug in and play harness on your Jeep JK Wrangler and even your toad's side markers, along with the front parking lights will work as well....:)
Good point, I did not realize that Cooltech wiring kits did that.
However, Cooltech only makes that harness for Jeeps. There are a LOT of other kinds of vehicles being towed behind MHs.

Yes and whatever is the most popular and will generate the most sales, so most sure that they have some of the others or will in the near future.
Really, the answer for others is quite simple if you don't want to mod anything and all you need is to run a wire cable from the toad's front to rear with the proper connectors on each end. Then make up a light bar or use a hitch haul for mounting the lights and plate as well if you want. Now you just slip it in the toad's hitch receiver and plug it in, when needed. If you choose to leave it there when not in use, you can also plug it in to the receivers connector and have some extra lighting back there. We use a hitch haul (though not for lighting) for a variety of uses and it also doubles as a bike carrier. - willaldExplorer II

Personally, I have much more important things to worry about.. - wny_pat1Exploreri think you guys worry to much. Never ever been pulled over when driving the RV.
In fact, when I brought the Allegro in Alabama many years ago, I drove it all the way back to NYS with the expired Alabama plates that the dealer left on it. Dealer said if I got stopped to show the leo the bill of sale, as they did not provide transport plates.
And just why would one need lights on the license plate during day time hours anyway? Don't drive the motorhome during the dark. - T_bone1Explorer IINo license plate light is one of the main reasons the trooper will stop you to look for other things.

You mean Florida requires backup when pulling over someone?? Our county deputies and state troopers pull people over all the time and don't have backup! Even in the middle of the night.pigman1 wrote:

Yeah, and you probably won't get stopped if you continue using your current setup for another 9 years. That's just reality. LEO's have a lot more important things to do than check plate lights on RV toads that drive 99% of their time in daylight. That said, there's always a chance that you'll hit the LEO that's having a really bad day and is looking for the first violation he/she can find. They're only human too. But you've probably got pretty high odds leaning your way.
Never thought about that. We use magnetic LED lights so I know there is not a light on the plate. We have towed for nine years without being stopped but that does not make it right.
Not only that, one squad car would really hate pulling over rigs such as these and would probably require backup to even approach the driver, considering all the possible hidden dangers that could exist within.
Not sure what the state or local law enforcement agencies might require for RV type rigs, I'm just thinking that I don't think it would be wise for one officer to be taking a chance like that. I mean you can't see inside like when approaching most automobiles. Come to think of it, I've never yet, seen a MH pulled over for a traffic violation in all of our travels thus far.
