Yep, I have the mindset of an offender, and proud of it. Last time I looked those speed limit signs were mere steel and paint, not carved in stone. They're just reasonable suggestions. I do obey the speed limit where it is sensible to do so: congested areas, work zones, school zones, city surface streets, etc. But the wide-open interstate with little to no traffic? Not a chance.
No sense having a bike that will do 140+ and never get over 75.
DW and I LOVE to see people like you blow past us, and 2 miles down the road be sitting with a Trooper behind them. We laugh like crazy as we cruise by, and in NC. It happens a lot.
Me I set my cruse control at 5 MPH over (never said I don't go over) and just relax. Don't cringe when I see a trooper, don't hit the brakes. Just cruse on by. - rk911Explorerfirst rule for driving in italy...rip out the rear view mirror because what's behind me is unimportant. :)
- VeebyesExplorer IIIn Europe generally they take their driving more seriously than in N America, especially the US. A good vehicle is not measured by how many cup holders it has or how many 12V sources it has.
The outside lane has long been regarded as a passing only lane. If you camp out there somebody will be right up behind you with the lights flashing telling you to get over. A mirror is used for much more than applying makeup on the way to work in the morning. - JaxDadExplorer III

Georgia enacted a similar law a few years ago. I've never seen it enforced.
In GA, the idea is to keep traffic flowing. Someone hogging the left lane causes traffic to slow down. It's not to reward speeders, it is to keep traffic flowing in an effort to reduce accidents.

The GA law is a little different. It's not a stay out of the left lane except to pass, but is a yield to faster vehicles. If you are not holding up anyone you can drive in the far left lane all you want.
Problem is in GA (especially in Atlanta), speed limits are not even a suggestion anymore. If you go the speed limit even in the right lane, you will get ran over and cussed by everyone and you will be holding up traffic. We locals joke about I-285 around Atlanta being a NASCAR training ground.
That sounds like up here. A morning show radio announcer recently repeated an old joke about highway driving.
“I was doing 30 OVER the speed limit and another driver got right up my back-side, flashing their lights, honking their horn and flipping me off, so I moved over. The worst part was...... it wasn’t JUST the nun driving the school bus ...... all the kids were flipping me off too!!!” - jfkmkExplorer

The guy shouldn’t have been in the lane, but notice how close the trooper was to him. Something anyone else would get pulled over for and ticketed for aggressive driving. - drsteveExplorerI have driven on I-96 near Detroit where it is four lanes wide, and the far left lane traffic is moving at 95-100 mph. And we're not talking about a bunch of boy racers and NASCAR wannabes, these were commuters and soccer moms in SUVs.

Idiocracy, we have arrived. The person who is abiding by the law is now the problem. You can't make this sheet up.
The problem is when it's two lanes in one direction and the person in the fast lane "THINKS" they are doing right on the posted limit. But in fact their odometer is off and they are actually driving slower as proven by having a GPS in your vehicle.
My motorcycle for example is actually doing 66-67 when it shows 70 on the ODO. My GPS app on my phone confirms this.

In some (most) states, the left lane IS an equivalent and equal lane to the right lane; as well it should be IMHO. There is no reason to "vacate" a perfectly good lane (oftentimes the smoother lane) UNLESS you are impeding other vehicles. The states that have passed those "no left lane unless passing" laws, IMO, are simply taking the easy way out rather than enforcing a law against impeding traffic; which becomes problematic when everyone is exceeding the posted limit.
Some people were never taught to drive properly, I've found out. Some view the left lane as an equivalent and equal lane to the right lane and are completely unaware of the fact that it's the passing lane.azrving wrote:
Driving 55 on the freeways in CA IS dangerous. It's common sense that all vehicles moving at similar speeds is the safest condition. Intentionally mixing vehicles at 2 different speeds, 15 mph apart, is a recipe for disaster. People running at 70 (the speed limit) are not "idiots" (as you claim) when they come flying up behind trailers running at 55 (the towing speed limit); after all, both are "following the law", right? I run 62-65 all the time (class A towing an enclosed trailer), up to 70 for passing; that is generally the same speed that semis are running, and the CHP ignores it, because even they see the idiocy in trying to enforce radically different speeds on the same roadway.
I'm talking about the people who tow at 55 as required in Cali as supposedly being the dangerous ones when idiots come flying up behind them. Again, you can't make up the stupidity that is sometimes posted in here. - down_homeExplorer II

Let's hope they enforce the speed limit as enthusiastically. If folks weren't in such a hurry thinking the speed limit only applies to other people, the left lane wouldn't be so congested.
higher speeds empty the roadways quicker, or in other words increase the number of vehicles the roadway can handle.
Problem is everyone has their on ideas on how fast they will go and some have no problem owning the road and not moving over to let traffic proceed at whatever the prevalent speed is.
