Fulltime stowing your outdoor grill & critters

Hi,

To those full-timers that use some sort of outdoor propane grill, and then stow that grill in your RV, do you have problems attracting critters and bears?

What sort of storage precautions do you use?

Thanks,
Bill

  • When I carried my Weber Q100 (?) grill, I always let it burn off before and after using it. Then I stored it inside a large tupperware plastic tub (with lid). I did this primarily so I could stack other things on top of it. I also drilled ventilation holes in the lid. Kept it in the basement and never had any bug/rodent problems. I never 'clean' a grill (no soap - ever). Letting it burn off at high temp for 10-15 minutes before AND after grilling is all I've ever done with ANY grill for the last 50 years. If there is a buildup, I will take it apart, get a scraper, and go at it. But no water and absolutely no soap. Unless you like the taste of soap.

I now carry a charcoal grill and just close all the vents and put it inside a big trash bag before setting it in the basement.
  • Thank you all. That is rather assuring. Will definitely incinerate the grill and storing it in a large tote sounds like a good idea too. I don't plan on using a very big grill since I'd be cooking for myself.

    Thanks again,
    Bill

We store our Coleman LXE in the bed of our pickup truck that has a tri-fold tonneau cover.

We don't store any outdoor critters. :)
Those two Canadians tried that with a bison calf in their minivan and got into big trouble doing so.
  • I use a cable to secure our Webber Q grill to the picnic table unless we're camping in bear country. Then I put it in the pass through storage. I've never had a problem.
  • No problem in a side compartment. Like others I'll burn it off for a while and clean to get rid of grease.
  • I use our Weber Q200 as our main grill at home and just leave it on the back deck all year long. No issues attracting rodents and there are plenty of them in our back yard. Just leave it on high for several minutes after you take the food off to carbonize everything.
  • We store ours (after cleaning) in a storage bay, or sometimes it rides inside the clean rubbermaid trash can (big) in the back of our cheap. Even when it sits outside after using it and sometimes for a month or so, we don't have any problem with critters/ants. Leave the burner on for a few minutes when you are done cooking to burn residue off.
  • We have stored our Weber propane grill and Coleman stoves in our basement pass-through storage continuously over the last 9 years and haven't had any problems associated with critters. We do clean them to an extent but they still have some residual food particles, like most we don't always have the time to get them perfectly clean after every use. Other than keeping the basement storage doors closed we have no secret method for keeping the smallest (ants) to the largest (bears) critters out. I guess we been lucky if this is a common occurrence for others.
