- BarneySExplorer IIIDriving on the interstates when towing, you will average 50 mph after fuel stops, lunches, potty breaks etc. Decide how many hours you will like to drive (we usually make it 6 or 7) and then you can know where to look for a campground.
Barney - boogie_4wheelExplorer520mi is what we did, with a toddler.
I'm going to go against the pack and say that 500 is easily doable. If you have the fuel capacity to maintain a decent average speed; frequent stops will make it difficult.
Our travel that day was pushed longer than we had planned because of a wildfire that threatened to shut down the highway we were traveling. We pushed on into and past the threatened area so that we would not need to backtrack. I will say that I wasn't planning for that distance, but would do it again without a second guess.
I'd do it again, but it isn't out of the norm for me to travel over 700mi in a day without a trailer, or on my motorcycle. - drsteveExplorer

It's too far.
I hope you are not going to average the responses to use as an argument for driving farther than your Wife would like. How long have you been married?
Happy wife happy life. - valhalla360NavigatorDoable but not fun.
Figure 12-14 hours by the time you stop for food and breaks. - DownTheAvenueExplorerYour wife is right. Your wife is always right. Remember that, it will make your life easier.

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone next August. I want to go about 550 miles the first day. My wife says thats too far. What do others think?
If you want to see a few sights, and enjoy the trip....it’s a bit far. It really depends upon the road conditions (interstate, rural, etc.) and have you seen this area of the drive before. When younger, and had a tight deadline....20 to 24 straight thru several times. I “do not” recommend!! ;)
Just last May... a hurried trip (towing our 5th wheel) from north-central Wyoming to St. Francisville,La ( funeral) in about 36 ( got a little nap in a rest area during the drive) hours. You will sleep pretty soundly for a little while after that! - DutchmenSportExplorerOur "normal" distance for a single day is around 300 miles. But on 3 different occasions, we drove straight through (from Florida back to Indiana), right at 1000 miles. The first time we did that, we said, "Never again". We said that again the second time a couple years later. And then the third time a year after that (Ellsworth, Nebraska to Indiana). But we've learned our lesson. It's just too taxing on us to drive that long. We make the distance, but are so exhausted when we get "there" we can't enjoy anything.
So, as tempting as it may be to rush, even getting home, it simply is NOT worth it, being drug-out once you get there.
300 miles! - Dave_H_MExplorer II940
- SteeljagExplorerStay relaxed and make it fun / safe ! No reason to risk your lives, and the lives of other families sharing the roadways by pushing yourself to exhaustion!
- IdaDExplorerA bit over 900 miles. I would do it again under the same circumstances but it was a long day.
