I understand that the older crowd doesn't always "get things" especially as it relates to IT..... But some of you would be really surprised at what digital exhaust trail you're constantly leaving behind without your knowledge and totally with your consent. :)
So true. I work for Experian and the more I learn about where we get data from the more I try to avoid giving it out. Last week one of my co-workers was going on about his experian fico report which we get for free. Out of curiosity I pulled mine up and it came up as saying "not enough data to calculate". That works for me. Basically debt free. - boshogExplorer

They get your name and address any ways, can easily get your registration from both the camper and the TV, likely have your credit card for payment, so what is the difference? Haven't all the states now removed your social security number from their DL? Michigan has, long time ago.
I don't see how it is a big deal. - boshogExplorerThey get your name and address any ways, can easily get your registration from both the camper and the TV, so what is the difference? Haven't all the states now removed your social security number from their DL? Michigan has, long time ago.
I don't see how it is a big deal. - RollandBExplorerHaving had ID fraud occur in the last year, I would ask them to block out the DL and DOB on the photocopy and verify it by showing me the copy. You never know where it ends up.

Never had one copied, campground or motel, but looked at at both.
If they wanted to photocopy, I'd probably walk!
You are absolutely right, may be for damage caused. I saw an old RVer about 90 drive over sewer connection with his toad. Seems to me he should have paid for the damage. I doubt he did. I guess no different than someone who hits your vehicle in a parking lot and skeedadles so he doesn't have to pay for damage. - _en_Plain_Air_Explorer7 rental cars ...
I am the OP. They did not have my original license, but not any credit cards or credit information. The ID theft was not financial in that no money was stolen or obligated in my name. Only the valid DL number. It was a head scratcher for me as well as the numerous LEO's with whom I was required to filed reports. The whole thing happened within a few weeks of my license being coped by a car dealership when I test drove a new car. Coincidental? I don't know. But I never got the copy back. - I also do a ton of traveling for work , I do SHOW a copy of my DL at check in , but never has a copy been made...
- CroweExplorer*If* you are worried about identity theft, you should have credit freezes with each of the 3 credit agencies...
Best advice yet. I had my identity stolen years ago-from a paper check. Nothing is immune so the onus is on you to protect yourself. I have an Equifax account which monitors everything. It allows me to lock my credit report so that it's inaccessible to any search, so anyone applying for credit in my name will be stopped in their tracks. My cc companies and bank all require me to notify them if I leave the area, otherwise my cards won't work. They also monitor my spending habits and question if something doesn't look right. A PITA at times but well worth it.
Rule of thumb on using debit cards is don't let the card out of your sight and do a physical look at the scanner to make sure there's no scamming devices attached. - beemerphile1ExplorerSince I froze my credit at all three bureaus a year ago I have absolutely no concerns about identity theft. Even I cannot apply for credit without thawing my credit let alone anyone else steal my identity. To thaw my credit only takes a few minutes online but you have to have the magic number which is not my social security number.
Here is everything you need to know about freezing your credit;

...when you go to the doctor's office (or a Lab), they copy your Medicare card - the person(s) making the copies have access to your SS number (it's on the Medicare card)....
The government demanded health insurance companies stop using SS# as identifier some years back but continued to use it themselves. That has now changed and will be phased in over the next few years. - SolidAxleDurangExplorer

....Honestly, not everyone is out to get you.
I'm getting a chuckle thanks to some of the responses....
I'll wager that some of the biggest tin-foil hat wearers here will also refuse to use online bill pay due to fear of some jerk at the bank messing it up or hacking their account...
Yet they'll send a HARD COPY check across country through the hands of untold numbers of individuals wrapped in an envelope that looks EXACTLY like a "bill-pay" envelope... This check has name, address, account number, routing number AND an original signature.. Bonus points for the hand written VISA/MC account number written on the memo field..
LOL.
