Insuring medical equipment in the RV

I am running into difficulty in insuring a piece of medical equipment that we carry in the RV with us. We carry a Hemo-Dialysis machine with us as we travel. We are fulltime and have that insurance. While trying to list the machine on the contents of the RV, companies are declining to cover it because I do not "own" the machine. How are some of the rest of you dealing with situation, or are you aware that if you are just using it via insurance company, but are the responsible party in case of an accident, that you are responsible and it may not be covered because you did not buy it and do not own it. Thanks in advance for your responses. Have a great day. Happy Trails Bert
  • As a person that may be facing Dialysis soon and am full timing please post how this works out for you. Thanks much.
  • Based on the insurers logic, is leased car not insurable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Something is amuck.

If the insurer is hiding behind the non-owned issue because the dialysis equipment is "loaned" pursue doing a $1 per year lease with the owner of the equipment. Second thought, does a $1 per year lease mean the value of the equipment is extremely low and therefore the insurance coverage would also be extremely low. Does the lender of the equipment insure the equipment. Perhaps the insurability of the equipment should be approached via the lender AND the user jointly.

  • As contents to the RV, most everything that would be destroyed in an accident and would be replaced by the insurance company is something you have purchased, I guess. That is what they base the contents on. I have gotten several different opinions after hours on the phone to several different companies and several different options, like home owners and renters policy also. The machine belongs to Davita Corp, and we get the use of it and the supplies to operate it and health insurance pays for that, just like an oxygen machine or a cpap. Under this premise, even a CPAP may not be covered by contents insurance. With Renters and home owners, anything off-premises is only covered from 2%-10% of the total contents, and the machine is valued at 25,000, so one would have to have a contents listed over 1/4 mil just to cover the machine.
Just looking to see if anyone has needed to replace, through insurance after accident, a piece of expensive medical equipment while fulltimimg. The company we have now has provided a rider, but has doubled the vehicle premium this year with no claims or anything, so time to leave. Any suggestions or prior knowledge would certainly be appreciated. Thanks
  • Dog Folks

We have been doing Home Hemo-Dialysis in the coach since September 2014. There are some things we have had to be creative on, but so far we have been successful. There are several requirements to stay in compliance, you must have at least one blood test per month and visit YOUR doctor once a month. Delivery of supplies while moving around can also be an adventure.

If you would like some info on how we do it, PM me with an email address and we can communicate that way with further information.

Thanks Hope this may help Bert
  • The problem as I see it is that you do not own the equipment. If there was a total loss who would the loss payee be? Probably not you but the equipment owner. Not sure how that would work.
  • You need to get away from your RV insurance and find a specialty insurance writer.
  • What does the company that owns the equipment say about insuring the equipment while in your possession? Might call then for guidance.

  • Still looking at options and stuff here. The equipment agreement reads "I understand that I will maintain homeowners or renters insurance insuring against loss, theft, damage, or destruction to the equipment, for its full replacement value and against liability and property damage caused by the equipment. I must notify my insurance carrier that I have custody and control over the Davita at Home Equipment............"

I am going to look at a speciality contract for coverage. I am also exploring a couple of other options and opinions yet. Sure is a puzzler though. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. Have a great day Bert
  • I found 2 companies that would insure the machine as additional personal replacement items. After all the telephone work, I reached out to the Dialysis coordinating company about what there responsibility is, and they are the responsible party in a loss. It would not hurt to check with your company and see if they will replace thing like Cpaps ans other medical equipment as part of your personal items, because most companies I talked with were of the opinion that if you did not pay for it they were not going to reimburse you for it. Hope this may help. Anyway, she found a donor match this week, so maybe in a few months we will not have to carry the machine at all. thanks to all and Travel safe. Bert
