It Can Wait - Video about Texting and Driving

Folks, I want to help spread the word about this video. I watched the entire documentary in one shot and can say that I cried more than once.

I am ashamed of the times I have driven and either texted, read/created email, used the web, etc. I would include using GPS/Google maps also on the list of never again!!!

I had my worst experience from using technology while driving during a phone call. I pulled out from a red light, running the red light, all without thinking. I slammed on the brakes while the drivers that I would have hit looked at me with a look that I will never forget. The video brought back all the feelings I had on that day.

I took the pledge - Will you?

  • Here in Texas, I've been witness to wrecks where someone was obviously texting (I was able to see them thumbing letters.)

Texting is against the law, and it also provides another factor -- gross criminal negligence. This turns a fender-bender which may be a civil case into a criminal one where someone takes the police car ride.

Even worse, it is easily tracked. A simple motion of discovery against a phone company can show the exact time and location where the text was sent, and that is pretty much an open/shut case right there, especially on a highway.

I live in Tucson AZ where it is against the law to text and drive. Since I sit up pretty high in my pickup, I can see down into other cars. In my unofficial sample, I'd say at least 1 out of 10 drivers are violating the law at any given time.

Of course it's against the law in Calif too but the penalties are not stiff enough to discourage it. Plus, the ticket does not count as a "point" on your insurance, which it should. The Cell Phone lobby took care of that. Should be at lease a $1,000 fine or more as they now rival drunk drivers in accidents and fatalities. I've had 3 cars wrecked by "distracted" drivers texting/talking on cell phones.

From my observations, not too many. Being on a motorcycle you tend to keep a close eye on other drivers, and waaaaay too many are driving while on the phone.

  • Haven’t seen the video or taken the pledge… but I refuse to use these devices while driving and always have…
I already had enough distractions and bad habits to work on from before these things were even thought of…

  • Driving is full time job. Always has been. Always will be.

I see countless people exit my subdivision from their homes, and they have the cell phone going. What can be that important? They can't all be involved in homeland security.

Many years ago my employer gave me a cell phone. I had a truck with a manual transmission at the time. I couldn't even come close to shifting gears and dialing a phone at the same time. But I will bet there is someone out there with a stick shift who texts.

There ought to be a law.
  • I'll have to catch the vid a little later.
    Thanx for posting.

Stopped touching the phone while driving 7 years a go.
I'm just not the kind who can operate a cell device and drive.

Coming home from Utah some time ago I picked up me BB to answer a call and drove off I-80 westbound.
Went right over two reflective markers before recovering.
This was on a straight road @ 70 mph with very light traffic.

    Never again very sobering.
Still shivers me timbers thinking about it.
  • When I travel, my responsibility is to drive, and the DW's task is to be the computer/phone/GPS operator. If I need to use "electronics" while driving, I pull completely off the road.
