Jeep Compass as Tow Veihicle behind an RV

We are looking for tow vehicle to pull behind our RV and we have found a 2012 Jeep Compass 4x4 with a manual 5 speed transmission. What I have found online appears as though the compass with a standard shift can be towed (the auto cannot due to lack of a transfer case neutral setting). I am wondering if anyone has had first hand experience flat towing (all four wheels on the ground) a standard shift Jeep Compass behind an RV ? Is there any reason it shouldn't work ? I found an owners manual online and it seems to approve. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks !

  • You make a good point. Thank you. I called Roadmaster just to be certain the 2015 vehicle brackets were available. They show a bracket for 2010 - 2014 Compass, but not a 2015. I did note that some vehicles showed showed 2015 models. Roadmaster was great. The took my call, researched the problem and called me back to confirm that the 2014 brackets would work. They are due to update their online list tomorrow with the 2015 info. They were fantastic to work with.
  • I tow 2012 Jeep Patriot 4x4 5 speed manual. Very simi
lar to the Compass..3 years now and works very well for us.
  • In answer to your 2nd question, No it doesn't matter between 2WD and 4x4 as long as they are manual transmissions. We tried to find a 4x4 5 speed as our first choice but there we none available. If we wanted one we had to special order it and accept delivery in 6-9 months, the cost of course goes up and up with anything special order. If you can find a 5 speed 4x4 new or otherwise great! Just a note the fwd is quite capable in snow and inclement weather.
Also, the new vehicles (ie) 2014 we had to wait 3 months to get the proper (blue ox) base plate as they were not in stock and had to be made. The 2014 had a redesign in the front frame and accessory mounting location from previous years. So take this into account if you plan to tow it right away or can wait for the proper set up to be ordered and delivered be it blue ox or roadmaster etc. etc..

  • Maybe some of those other sites didn't recognize what you were referring to when you ask about the Compass being a good "tow vehicle". What you should be referring to is a "towed vehicle", affectionately called a "toad" or "dinghy".

A tow vehicle is one doing the towing...such as your motor home. A small issue, but it may have confused others.

    I know, I know....picky, picky, picky.

We purchased a new vehicle for our toad and it has worked out well.

    Good luck

  • At least some answers... Forgive me, but I have tried other sites for info and no one seems to know what I am talking about. Thank you so much for the response and the information. We are comparing 2015 standard 5 speeds to the 2012 used 4x4 5 speed at this time. I hate to tow a new car, but we plan on having it for a while (since we are setting up to tow) so we might go with the new. Do either of you have a 4x4 Compass, or are they both FWD ? Just curious if it matters. Thanks again ! :)
  • We have been towing a 2007 Jeep Compass for about a year now. I have a Roadmaster tow bar and base plates. The Compass tows like a love sick puppy dog. I don't even know it's back there. The car is a 5 speed and I do have to turn the key to unlock the steering wheel. I did have a key made up that doesn't have the buttons on it just for towing.
  • We tow a 2014 Jeep Compass behind our Coachmen Aurora. Towing 4 down with a manual transmission works just great. The owners manual endorces towing in this fashion and according to our dealer does not effect the warranty in any fashion. The compass is the perfect height for us and when hooked up with our Blux Ox tow bar and baseplate is perfectly level with the MH. No riser or dip tow adapter required. The hardest part for us was finding a new Compass with a standard tranny. Apparently there were only a handfull made for 2014 all the others were automatic transmissions. We got the only one available in eastern Canada at the time. The 2014 does not have a locking steering wheel so the key is not required if you run a seperate 12V supply for the Brake Buddy. Otherwise the key has to be turned to accessory for the cigarette lighter to work. Enjoy your Compass its a nice light SUV 3100lbs with room for 5 and excellent on gas/fuel milage. It towes straight and has just enough resistance in the rack and pinion steering to make it corner and track behind effortlessly even on gravel and dirt roads.
