- MedicoExplorer IIIn about 07 or 08 Jeep removed the steering wheel lock so the transfer case in neutral, transmission in park and key removed.
- Big_KatunaExplorer IIYes. The transfer case goes in N.
- timmacExplorerYes with transfer case in neutral and transmission in park, the Jeep book will have the directions of how to flat tow.
Also key left in with the steering wheel in unlock mode but no dash lights on, or that's how my 04 does it, what's your year.. - cjosephExplorerWe've pulled our 2013 automatic Wrangler Unlimited about 5,000 miles already, so I hope so.
Here are the steps from the Owner's manual. This is actually my cheat sheet that I cut, pasted and laminated. We use it every time. Hey, I don't want my transfer case or transmission bouncing down the road in pieces.
Recreational Towing – Four-Wheel Drive Models
NOTE:?The transfer case must be shifted into NEUTRAL (N), automatic transmission must be shifted into PARK, and manual transmission must be placed in gear (NOT in NEUTRAL) for recreational towing.

GWilson,
Just wondering, what year "Wrangler" are we talking about? The reason I ask is, the term "Wrangler" has been in the Jeep nomenclature for quite some time and, applies to different year Jeeps. Almost all of which are flat towable, with or without an automatic. Just wondering.
Scott - John_WayneExplorer IIHas to be 4X4 2 wheel drive can't be flat towed if auto.

Actually, the 4X2 Wrangler can not be flat towed, PERIOD!
Unless the driveshaft is removed.
Manual or automatic transmission makes no difference.
READ the Owners Manual, and FOLLOW the instructions.
EDIT: On second thought, FOLLOW the instructions EXCEPT for a couple of things;
When I was towing a Jeep, I would always hook the towbar to the motorhome FIRST, then go through the rest of the procedures except for setting the parking brake. When the towbar is connected to the motorhome, there is no need to set the parking brake, and if it is not set, you can't forget to release it (don't ask).
It is a great deal easier to bring the Jeep to the motorhome than to back the motorhome to the Jeep! - GWilsonExplorerThanks for the input, have not bought a jeep yet, but will do so.

Manual or Auto makes no difference, as long as it's a 4 x 4.
