Keeping RV registered in different state after moving?

I live and own homes in Florida and Nebraska. I have a pickup, couple of motorcycles and the fifth wheel registered in Nebraska.

I have a pickup, car, several motorcycles and boat registered in Florida.

The Nebraska vehicles are insured through a Nebraska company, Florida vehicles in Florida.

The insurance for all of that, a couple of ATV's and a 3rd home isn't cheap.

I'm in compliance of the law. My RV and boat and one truck reside in MN and is tagged and insured in MN. My drivers license is my home state KS. I am following the letter of the law for compliance. It's where the vehicles reside not where you live.

Not a issue crossing the border into Canada with a truck and RV in one state and drivers license in another. Call your DMV for compliance.

So you have a MN mailing address? I was curious about this so I called the DPS and a MN mailing address is required in MN.

BTW, I don't have a problem with this, I'd rather have the fees and taxes remain in MN, not like some snowbirds, saving $50 on their plates by registering in FL.

Now you are left with the MH registered in WA and insured thru CA. Get in an accident and you will certainly run into problems with coverage.

For it to all go well you have to keep your drivers license in WA. Then you can keep it registered and insured there.

But that brings up what you are going to do with your personal vehicle? Change the plates to CA on that and they will want you to change your drivers license and the circle begins back to square one!

I went through this when we moved from NY. California has very strict laws and timelines regarding DL's and car registration. The DMV here encourages people to turn neighbors in with out of state plates.

Call your insurance company. They can explain unless they don't represent in California.

OK, you are a upfront guy wanting to understand your options.

You've gone way beyond my vehicle experience and now involves schools, etc.

Get legal advice from those that understand the requirements of both states.

Not sure the intention of your post, but I have stated I am not trying to circumvent anything here. I will gladly register it in California, but then I worry about the reverse role. I will be driving and living in Washington with my MH and what happens if a cop pulls me over, especially in a small town where they would know me, and I am there with a CA drivers license and CA MH? If my MH STAYS in WA why wouldn't it be registered in WA.

The problem is that I meet the residency requirements of both states

CA: Claims tax exemptions for a home in California.
Enrolls themselves or their dependents in any type of school (college, grade school, high school, etc).

WA: Maintains a residence in Washington for personal use;
Is attending school in this state and paying tuition as a Washington resident or is a custodial parent with a child attending a public school in this state;

The school thing sounds odd, but California allows for Charter schools. So we plan on putting our kids in charter school for specific programs when we are there.

The rest of the time, they are enrolled in a Washington-based online school through the WA public school system. We have to take them back to WA for standardized testing. They are assigned a public school teacher in WA schools. We have already checked and because we live there part time, this is completely legitimate.

So according to my interpretation, when I go to WA and I stay more than 30 days, I have to move all of my DL, vehicle registration to WA. Then when I go back to CA I have to do this after 20 days again.

It sounds like dual resident is made for this, and I see references to it, but would really like to hear from anybody who has actually done it.

BTW When I submitted my exemption the BOE suggested I pay the use tax just so there would be no penalties while they reviewed the case. I suggested they reread my 100+ pages of detailed log and receipts.

You will be a CA resident and not a WA resident right?

CA makes it very tough to have a vehicle registered elsewhere but it might be possible if you understand the details. Start by calling the CA BOE and reading Pub 52 and there may be other documents that you need to understand. As a CA resident I met the requirements to buy and keep a MH without paying any use tax. This may/may not apply to your situation.

And just so you know: DO NOT depend upon anything the DVM tells you. DO NOT depend upon anything the BOE tells you. The ONLY thing that matters is when the BOE checks to see if you owe taxes is how they interpret the documents at THAT time. If you understand and follow the requirements then you should be OK. I speak from experience as both the CA DMV and BOE gave me both incorrect and correct information on the phone. But I got it right and the BOE agreed.

Consider keeping a signed/dated log of each event that is relevant to what will be considered relevant for you situation. A binder with non removable pages, add receipts etc, whatever is needed for your "proof". Even consider having it notarized at points in time.
