Older Florida Sunpass may not work after 12/31

They will also replace the old ones for free - I don't know if they still are doing this, but you could always go to a toll service area (or toll plaza) and pick a new one up with a credit towards the price.

Ack!! Last week we drove around Chicago - only had to pay (cash) tolls twice, but I didn't realize my Sunpass would work??

On edit - after visiting the Sunpass website, it seems they are "working on" compatibility. Next state: N Carolina. By the sounds of it, it will take a while for it to be compatible everywhere...

and Fla SunPass is now honored in GA and NC." NCWriter has nailed it down to Oct. 2016.

It looks like they are replacing battery powered SunPass which was the first one I had but now I have a portable non battery powered one and have not been notified that I need to replace it.

Forgive this probably deemed ignorant question, but what do out of country, out of state RVers do, that travel through various states/provinces and hit unmanned/unsuspected toll booths as ambling along that don't accept cash any more?

Never had a problem paying as we go through, but I'm hearing more and more are being unmanned/non cash and you need to have a prepaid pass of some description. It's not always viable or easy for out of country temporary folks sometimes to obtain maybe this EZ/Sunpass referenced I would have thought. Also I know we have often come across a toll booth we didn't realize would be there in advance being often serendipitous travellers at times.

IIRC I remember someone mentioning something about an unmanned bridge toll in BC Canada that they had to just drive through not knowing how/where to pay. What are the consequences of doing so when at that moment in time you have no other option?

I know in FL they take a picture of your vehicle and mail you a statement at the end of the month. (Just got my bill with very clear picture from Ocrober) IL gives you a chance to pay online, they have signs after toll of how to do it.

If you travel a lot in midwest/northeast, probably wouldn't hurt to get an I-Pass from IL. No charge for unit or monthly charges, just keep a balance in your account

Florida doesn't ticket anymore unless you have ALOT of unpaid tickets, or you never pay it. They just create an account and charge it to your mailing address and license plate. They do accrue interest though - some people have $10,000 bills because they have never paid a toll.

We decided to make it a big non-issue and now have a Sunpass. The fact it's going to start working in more and more areas outside Florida is an added bonus.

Just towed through all these regions and didn't take a single toll road. Absolutely beautiful drives on US highways and non-toll interstates. Personally I despise tolls and avoid them like the plague. All just my humble opinion.

Great tip/ update from the OP.

Last year we got caught by surprise by a few coin-only, non-attendant toll gates in FL. If that happens, make a note of the Toll Gate number and the website address. Once home, you go to the website, tell when you passed that station, and make a payment.

Getting a SunPass is easy - most drugstores and grocery stores sell them, then you register your unit with SunPass online. It's also cheaper - the toll is less $ electronically, than paid in cash. I just don't drive near Chicago enough to justify having the E-Pass; but am happy that my Sunpass will work some day.

So, does this mean that EZ Pass will be accepted in Fla. and Sun Pass will be accepted in EZ Pass states?
