X2 When I think about some of the dumb things I did as a teenager, I am amazed I survived!
By the way, dumb things still occur now that I am older, they are just a slightly safer form of dumb. - old_guyExplorerI think I read that one when I was a kid.
- I always laugh when I hear this one!
People who do not know beans from buckshot about RV's find this fascinating and they continue to massage and spread this myth.
People who actually own an RV analyze the story and realize it is impossible to siphon from the black tank, and laugh at the gullible ones who think this kind of made up story is true!
I have heard this one many times over the past 30 years and still get a chuckle out of it. - VeebyesExplorer II

Another myth is the Winnebago cruise control-The "winner" every year: In November, Mr. Grazinski purchased a brand new 32 foot Winnebago motor home. On his first trip home, having joined the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly, the Winnie left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the handbook that he could not actually do this. He was awarded $1,750,000 plus a new Winnebago.

Yeah but don't we hear this time after time as a good reason to get a Class A or C instead of a towable???? - carmeloExplorerSaw this one on the TV news this week. A man stopped his van over the fill pipe for the underground tanks in a gas station. Dropped a hose into the tank with the intention of filling 2 55 gallon drums in the van. He was found dead by the firemen when the whole thing went up in flames. Get this he was SMOKING.
His family said that they had warned him to stop stealing gas like that!
I think that this was in Detroit.
CCC - SDcampowneroperExplorerThe 2001 Award should have been given to the 2 teen boys near Sturgis, SD who, while the rest of the family was away skiing in Co., during the April blizzard that year tried to siphon gas from Dads Harley to fill a snowmobile in the garage of their custom log home
With a shop vac. Everything was a total loss, including the MH beside the house, as the FD could not get there in the storm.
My son realized then that he should be selecting smarter friends - PawPaw_n_GramExplorerA rather nice young man I knew for a few years received a 2010 Darwin Award. His family misses him.
The survivor of the incident suffered through 8 months of treatment for his burns. His very young daughter was scared of him for a long while due to his scars.
Yes, what they did was incredibly stupid, very dangerous and it was just dumb luck that one actually survived.
We joke about their stupidity, but many of us also remember some such things we have done in out youth.
I also agree the siphoning incident was impossible in an RV, but very likely could have occurred with a boat. - Chris_BryantExplorer IIAnother myth is the Winnebago cruise control-

The discharge would not require any siphoning at all and the vent would require more than most could do. Now if you have access to the inside, through the toilet. Maybe someone knows something I don't know???
- punomaticExplorerMy guess is that this story may have started with a boat. The fuel filler and the holding tank pump out on some boats I have seen are nearly identical, although I don't know how you would expect to siphon fuel from a boat, since the tanks are generally below the waterline.
