Our first camping trip - Jellystone PA

After a few months of rehab work on our trailer we finally completed our first camping trip this past weekend. We had a few minor issues and learned a lot, but most importantly everyone had a great time.

Here's a link to our write-up and some photos from the weekend.

I laughed at the second to last paragraph, that is exactly what we do (did, as our "kids" are grown now!) -- on last morning after breakfast, wife takes kids to playground as I finish packing, hooking up the trailer, and bringing it to the dump station (if we didn't have sewer hookup). Meet wife and kids at camp store, they jump in, and home we go!
  • Reminds me of a trip to Rochester we made a few years ago, except we were BAKING in a low voltage KOA. I overnighted a Hughes power booster at ridiculous expense, only to have the temp drop from the mid 90's to 70 the very next day. The booster has actually saved us several times since. Rochester area is very unpredictable!
  • Great First trip! Glad you had fun.
We are on the MD / PA line and will winterize soon.
Last year we made the mistake of listening to the weather man when we decided to go north for a Thanksgiving camping trip at our daughters place near Rochester NY. Winterization was no big deal - it was done before we left home and I took 4 gallons of pink stuff along with us. Set up in the CG and flushed out the antifreeze and camped. Then winterized again when we packed up to head home.

Williamsburg should be fine for Thanksgiving. Not like our trip: The only issue we had that trip was the temp went about 20 degrees colder than expected one night (went to 7, instead of 28 to 30 as forecast) and the heat could barely keep up. In the middle of that coldest night, I was up opening covers to let warm air get in around the plumbing which froze anyway just to the point it stopped flowing - heater ran for about 8 hrs straight and barely held 45 degrees inside -- by 7 AM the sun was heating us up and all was good again and no damage, thankfully.

We have been to the Williamsburg KOA many times, since our kids (us too!) amusement park of choice has always been Busch Gardens - we do camping / rollercoaster trips often.

We were planning to winterize the trailer when we got back, but had so much fun we're heading down to Williamsburg, VA for Thanksgiving. I'm still a little surprised everything went as well as it did. The kids actually went to bed easier in the trailer than they do at home:)

Jellystone is a nice campground... Particulary in the summer. FYI, given your location it may be prudent to winterize now, and de-winterize for your Thankgiving trip. We generally winterize by Nov 1st here in MD.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll winterize this weekend and either de-winterize or just use bottled water for the Thanksgiving trip.

  • Great Fun..looks like the "bounce pillow" is a giant trampoline ..but safer
can't go as high, can't fall thru

your next trip will be more fun
  • Very nice first trip! Halloween camping is always fun. I've never seen anything like that bounce pillow except the typical blow up jump houses.

  • Glad you had a great time. There's a reason the first trip is considered a "shakedown" or "maiden" voyage. Next trip will be even better.
