Prodigy Brake Controller

Never had an issue with this controller but as I was taking the 5er in for service work today the normal "c" for connect was blinking "S-H". Never seen that before.

One in a while it would come back to "C" but mainly the other.

I had the connector in the truck replaced on the trip we were just on but that was weeks ago and all was fine.

The brakes seem to work fine but as to voltage level and stopping and all.

Any idea?

Thanks.

  • we had a simpler issue with our prodigy. the problem turned out to be a bare wire shorting out in the axle tube. It worked or it didn't work and finally it didn't work. Easy fix. This was in 2001

  • Good thing you have a break control that can tell you something is wrong. A cheap brake control may not tell you there is a problem. I hope you can find the short.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, guys, kinda what I thought.

My connector in the truck was replaced about a month ago while we were traveling as the original one was shot and I was loosing brakes and lights a lot. The guy did a great job; even had a test plug and all. I watched the whole thing.

I was going to do it myself but the harness in the truck was so short I just could not work with it at all bending around with my bad back.

The brakes work fine; come up to full set voltage and correct level. But not sure on the lights and will have to check that.

I have the trailer in for some ext warranty work - the a/c died for one thing - and will add this to the list to have then check out.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

  • I believe Old-Biscuit has it correct. We had that same issue sometime ago on our previous trailer and found the plug connection on the trailer was shorting out.
  • Prodigy 'S H' code....short circuit

The most likely problem is a pinched wire or at some point the wire insulation has cracked or been worn to the point where the copper wire inside is making contact with the trailer frame or another metal part. To find the problem, you will need to start at the trailer connector, making sure it is not corroded, dirty, or damaged, then work your way back to the brake magnets, examining the wire as you go.
