- tatestExplorer II4R100, I do, 30,000 interval. Ford dealer does it as a flush, not a change, for a little over $200, so it adds 7/10 of a cent per mile to operating costs.
Operating most of the time in hot weather, I find the fluid is pretty well aged at 30,000 miles. Because the vehicle is always close to GVWR, and often operated close to GCWR, maintenance belongs on the severe duty schedule.
The interval may have been changed for the 5R110, with the change in transmission fluid. But not likely much more than 50K or 60K miles. - sjholtExplorerI'm gonna tell you just like I told my friend. Change all the fluid to any synthetic trans fluid. He didn't and blew up his trans climbing a grade in Colorado.
The tow cost him $1500 and it cost him $2400 for a rebuilt ford trans.
He told me that the mechanic told him the cause was the fluid was burned up causing a lack of lubrication and took out the bearing and seals.
I just shook my head and walked away from him... - georgelesleyExplorerConsidering that most RV chassis are being worked at or near their gross design weight just going down the road with little additional weight inside, Changing all fluids on the manufacturers schedule is prudent. I also change all fluids, belts, hoses on schedule or every 5 years whichever comes first, and on all used vehicles when purchased. Keeping fluids and all rubber parts (including tires) in good shape will eliminate 90% of the breakdowns you see along the highway.
- Okie1ExplorerI change mine every 50,000 miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic (18 quarts). 250,000 miles and still going strong. If you can't drain your torque converter I would consider flushing.
- noe-placeExplorerI go by mfrs manual for ALL maintenance. So far so good except for fuel sending unit fail and I never did figure out why it went out with only 40K on the MH.
- JJBIRISHExplorerI change antifreeze, tranny fluid and the rear-end fluid the earlier of every 30,000 or 1 year… I also have the brake fluid flushed every couple of years, no set schedule…
I have been told its overkill but I change my engine oil every 3500 or so miles and am told that is overkill to…
But it’s cheap… what I don’t change is vehicles very often, that is expensive… - dodge_guyExplorer III do mine every 25k regardless. It's cheap insurance compared to a replacement trans.
- RedskyExplorerCheck the owners manual. My transmission fluid change interval is every 25k miles or every 24 months, whichever comes first, when using TES 389 ATF. With TES 295 ATF the service interval is every 75k miles or 48 months, whichever comes first.
The GM dealers only stock TES 389 fluid and want $200 in labor for a 45 minute job so I found a Castrol Transynd TES 295 dealer and had them change the transmission fluid and filter. - skipncharExplorerManuals recommendations usually have two levels of maintenance. If you tow much at all you should use the HD service column and not the standard duty column.
- CloudDriverExplorerWe have the 4R100 transmission in our 2003 E450. I have changed the fluid twice at the recommended 30,000 mile intervals using this procedure. Will do it again this Summer as we will be past the 90,000 mile mark.
