Ready Brake System

We just bought a 2012 Forest River 283ts, and a new 2013 Subaru Crosstrek as a "toad". Getting it set up to tow. Have a Roadmaster Sterling hitch, lights are set up, and now looking at brake systems. Studied them all and am leaning toward the Ready Brake System. It looks simple, foolproof, and is a bargin.
Anyone using this system? Any comments, feedback, problems?
Any input will be welcome.
Thanks,

You all can disreguard this. I searched through previous posts about the Ready Brake and you have already answered my questions.
I'll be getting one this week.

  • My Crosstrek is a 5-speed stick. All Subaru's with a stick-shift can be flat towed--all four wheels on the ground. That is per the owners manual, and also from my dealer who is one of the better and more knowledgable than the norm. A Subi with a stick can only be towed with four wheels down. It cannot be towed on a dolly with only two wheels down. All Subie's weather stick or auto, if they have to be towed with either the front end or rear end up, cannot be towet, they must be flat-bedded.
I do not know what has to be done to a Subi with an automatic tranny so it can be towed any distance. My owners manual says it ok to tow an auto only for a short distance and only at a very low speed.
In short, a stick shift Subi can be FLAT TOWED with no modifications, tranny in neutral and ignition on first click to unlock the steering. No limit as to speed or distance.
Just save yourself a lot of grief, worry, and headaches, and get a stick.

  • Is your Crosstrek a manual or auto? We had looked at Subaru's but found the only way to be able to tow is w/manual or putting a disconnect on drive shaft which would void warranty? We ended up putting on the disconnect on our 4Runner instead. That came with it's own issues:(
  • Really like the Crosstrek. Neat little mini suv. Its our 6th Subi. Wife drives a 2010 Outback. Initially went to look at the 2014 Forrester, but after driving the Crosstrek I was sold. It's my daily driver, and our dingy on the road.

  • That is what we use and the next one will be on the tow bar not the extra part.
  • How do you like your Crosstrek? We are towing a 2008 Impreza Sport Manual with the ready brute Elite and really like it. It is the DW's daily driver.
  • Glad you got the information you needed. the 'Search' feature can frequently provide you enough reading material to last several days. :)

As you have found out, there are lots of us on here that use the ReadyBrake system, are very happy with it, and will have no other system.

It just seems like a no-brainer decision: Comes at a small fraction of the cost of all other system, nothing to have to put in or take out when hitching and unhitching, and no electronics to foul up, just simple cable-operated braking. Anything that may eventually break or wear out, you can repair yourself with parts found at a hardware store for less than $20. I personally won't own any other braking system.
