rush hour start I-95 east N.J.?

I'm planning to stay at Liberty Harbor Rv park in N.J. this coming June, I'm pulling a 30' 5th wheel. I will be traveling on I-78 east to the park. Does anyone know when rush hour traffic starts? My other question, are there many tolls on that stretch of I-78?

Thanks for any info

  • do not cross the Delaware River towing and using an EZ-Pass, they admit that their computer software does not know how to correctly calculate your rig and incorrectly changes. NJ traffic going east for commuter traffic starts in PA and goes to NYC. Either come through before 7am, or wait until after 9am to enter NJ. Also you will hit a lot of traffic coming east on a Sunday afternoon/evening as everyone comes back from their weekend away. Friday nights heading west are heavier traffic then M-Th. Traffic heading west from NYC to PA M-Th starts around 4pm and doesn't lighten up until around 7pm.
  • I'm a Northern NJ local.

Traffic will start to build to potential stop and go levels after about 6:30, be at its worst from about 7am to 8:30am, and ease up after 9am. If you can schedule the drive in to hit the Delaware River Bridge at about 9am, that will put you past the worst all the way to the NJ Turnpike Newark Bay Extension that is the way to Jersey City and Liberty Harbor. If this will be an afternoon trip, get yourself to Liberty Harbor by 3:30pm

As previously posted there is a toll on the Delaware River bridge, but not in the eastbound direction. The NJ Turnpike extention is tolled though.

no tolls on 78E towards your destination...

EVERYONE is going east in the morning; wait til after 9 a.m.

When I make my trips to LI I try to drive through late at night 11 PM to 5 AM. I also like to drive through the city on a weekend whenever possible.

Maybe you can arrive between 3 & 5 AM and if they are closed and if there is room outside maybe you can park outside the entrance and wait for ten to open. I would rather sit there and cook breakfast or take a nap then sit in traffic wasting fuel

There is a toll bridge between Pa. and NJ going over the Delaware River. It is only collected on the west bound side so it is double the price. No big deal in a car but a friend of mine with a triple axle 5th wheel said it was pricey. http://www.drjtbc.org/

I take that route quite often and consider that toll to be ver cheap. I was towing a double axel 5th wheel with a dually pick up truck and I think it was only about $10. The toll to go over the GWB is a little less than $100. Both the I-78 toll and the GWB tolls are one direction tolls. By the way if you need to get on to Long Island the toll for the GWB and the Whitestone or Throgs Neck Bridge combined are probably over $100.

Try to avoid the NJ turnpike the tolls are expensive.
